Haitian Kompas Music

Haitian Kompas Music

With its dominance of the Haitian music market since the 19th century, Compas music is the natural candidate to be the country's national music. This popular, modern form of Meringue was made popular by Nemours Jean-Baptiste, a Haitian guitar and saxophone player in 1955. Today, Compas is recognizable through its many notable musicians including Djakout Mizik, and can be experienced in a number of different compas-derived sounds such as, Kompa, Rara, Cadence rampa, Mizik rasin and Kadans.
