Film Festival gives World Competition Award to Director Peck

Haitian director Raoul Peck's "Fatal Assistance" nabbed top prize at Abu Dhabi Film Festival. It concerns Haiti's attempts to rebuild itself after the 2010 earthquake. He is also director of films "L'Homme sur les Quais", "Haitian Corner", "Corps Plonges", and "Lumumba".

Peck served as Haitian Minister of Culture for nearly two years, and has helped develop Haiti's cultural life, launching Foundation Forum Eldorado and purchasing movie theatre Eldorado to support local artists.

The city of Port-à-Piment, Haiti

Welcme to the city of Port-à-Piment in Haiti. It is located in the South peninsula about 52 km from the town of Les Cayes.

Port-a-Piment Burgeoning Tourist Destination. It is a coastal town in South Department, with a population at the last census count of 17,000-plus.

Its education system is well developed with primary, secondary, and university level schools. But its health system is not, with a single health center and recently built hospital.

The primary tourist attraction, Marie-Jeanne Cave, is still being excavated for riches hidden there by Taino Indians. The spectular beauty of the caves will help to draw more tourists to the area.

In Haiti in the Coteaux Arrondissement is Port-a-Piment commune. In the southern section of Port-a-Piment stands La Grotte Marie Jeanne, covering two and a half miles of ground.

A three-tiered cave, it contains stalactites, a rose-hued deck, and dangling vines. Archaeological riches have been excavated there, harking back to the indigenous Tainos. To date 36 chambers have been found, with possibly more yet undiscovered.

The entry fee to explore the caves along with experienced guides in $2 USD.

Port-à-Piment Millennium Village Research Center

Port-à-Piment is part of the Côteaux Arrondissement. It was an unincorporated area, first known as Prickly in 1700. Two communes of 36,000 residents comprise Port-à-Piment, Paricot and Broomsticks.

Port-à-Piment has eight elementary schools, a high school, and two universities. Healthcare services are provided by a medical facility of three physicians, two nurses, five medical assistants and a lab worker.

Port-à-Piment's Millennium Village is a research center, funded for $150,798. It will target a spectrum of Port-à-Piment sectors: health, education, sanitation, agriculture, and disaster risk monitoring.
