In 2013, students at the University of Ethnology Battled Police Over Student Killing. For some unknown reasons, it was reported that the Haitian National Police (HNP) fired at and killed a student on the University of Haiti school grounds.
Upset by the killing, Ethnology students started a demonstration against the killing. When the HNP arrived, they fired at length on the demonstrators to scatter them. HNP's behavior suggests Haiti still has remnants of a military government in its midst.
