US Ambassador Kenneth Merten declaring Michel Martelly a Haitian citizen

US Ambassador Kenneth Merten declaring Michel Martelly a Haitian citizen

Here is a picture surrendering the proble of citizenship faced by President Michel Martelly. US Ambassador Kenneth Merten declaring Michel Martelly a Haitian citizen.

When in March 2012, the snowball rumor about Michel Martelly's nationality transformed into an avalanche, destroying his credibility to hold the president's office, then-U.S. Ambassador to Haiti Kenneth Merten (August 25, 2009 - July 20, 2012 ) came to his rescue. Merten said Mr. Martelly is not an American citizen and he does not have a U.S. passport. However, the Haitian legislature was not satisfied with that explanation. About one year ago in early 2011, a bogus U.S. passport was surfaced on the Internet that purported to be Michel Martelly's. Marten's assurances could not impress the members of a special commission of the Haitian Senate responsible to investigate politicians who hold dual citizenship. However, Martelly termed this citizenship controversy initiated by Senator Jean-Charles as "conspiracy", organized by people who can't believe Michel Martelly is going to be the country's President.

Should birthright citizenship be eliminated in the US?

Should birthright citizenship be eliminated in the US?

What is your opinion on this? Do you think birthright citizenship in the United States should be eliminated?

"Birthright" establishes a principle of equality that dates back to the very creation of U.S democracies. Donald Trump has recently proposed to end birthright citizenship. He has argued that granting automatic citizenship to children born in the U.S. remains the biggest magnet for illegal immigration. The United States confers citizenship by what's referred as "jus soli" -- Latin for right of soil -- as opposed to "jus sanguinis" -- Latin for right of blood. The supporters of Trump are arguing that immigrants are taking advantage of this practice by giving birth to "anchor babies" -- children who could eventually help their parents get citizenship. While others argue that it's a time honored American practice that should endure. Donald's proposal requires a constitutional amendment with a two thirds majority vote in both the House and the Senate, followed by ratification of three-fourths of the states or a constitutional convention called for by two-thirds of the State legislatures-- which have a very thin chance of success.

Dominican Republic removing citizenship from up over 200,000 people

Dominican Republic removing citizenship from up over 200,000 people

The Dominican Republic manages to remove the citizenship of up over 200,000 of its people and got away with it. They are Dominicans of Haitian descent.

On June 17, the deadline for registering Haitian migrants on official migration status in the Dominican Republic has expired. Now about 500,000 Haitians and Dominicans of Haitian descent are facing threats of forcible removal. The Dominican Ministry of the Interior has confirmed that those who have failed to fulfill the conditions of residency status will be made to leave the country. The stand of the Dominican government, particularly in relation to the 'Dominicans of Haitian descent' is very strong. From the ongoing situation, it appears that they have initially succeeded to term them as illegal immigrants in their country of birth. An estimated number of 200,000 people of first-generation Haitian residents were born and raised in the D.R who know themselves as Dominicans. They are now being told that they are Haitian and subject to forcible expulsion from a place they call home and to a country where they know no-one.

Did you know that there is in fact a Saint for Green Card?

November 13 has been declared the Feast Day for Mother Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini,

Mother Cabrini arrived in New York from Italy in 1889. Her original mission was to aid Italian immigrants. She later created orphanages, schools, pharmacies. She was credited for a variety of Immigrant Services such as English as a Second Language classes, legal support and help with citizenship applications

Mother Frances Cabrini was born in Sant'Angelo Lodigiano in the province of Lombardy, northern Italy, on July l5, 1850. She arrived in New York in March, 1889, off the boat from Europe with over one thousand immigrants ready to begin a new life. She established sixty-seven schools, hospitals, and other institutions of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, worldwide. At the age of 67 she died in Chicago's Columbus Hospital on December 22, 1917. In 1933, her remains were moved to the chapel of Mother Cabrini High School and following her canonization in 1946, the place became a spot of pilgrimage. She was the Universal Patron of Immigrants in the Catholic Church, well known for her love of God and her service to His people. Today, the Shrine continues as a center of welcome for new immigrants and pilgrims of many nationalities who come to pray and reflect. Recently, when the Feast Day for Mother Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini was being celebrated during the second weekend of November at her Fort Washington shrine, amid many immigrant worshippers, Father Julian Jagudilla who is from Manila, while presiding over the Sunday's ceremony, he said, the politicians, both Democrats and Republicans, should stop making immigration a pawn. Instead of offering the poor immigrants what they want, they are playing the game in their own interest. He indicated over 200 pending appeals to his church-- ranging between people without status to parents petitioning for children, lying undecided. He considers the current immigration policy, even from the economic standpoint is senseless.
