ID office open in the Diaspora for Haitians

ID office open in the Diaspora for Haitians

The current political situation may be cause for panic as the problem for election in Haiti can not be resolved between the Government of Michel Martelly and the opposition. However, the Haitian Diaspora is getting closer and closer to become a determining factor in the next election in Haiti.

Haiti is moving forward with the plan to have all its citizens counted and to give them the right to vote, no matter where they are. It is in the same concept that the actual government has decided to create this new ID office in the Diaspora for Haitians.

As was promised early last month, an ID office has been set up were Haitians living in the U.S. can go to receive their national identification cards. Located in the consolute for Haiti in Miami, the office will begin operations in December and will issue cards that will serve for 10 years. These cards will have a specific number assigned, just as in the case of the Social Security number, and will afford diaspora members a chance to stay active in the future of their homeland.

Haitian Identification System

Haitian Identification System

Issued upon maturity at age 18 to all Haitians, the National Identification Card is a non-transferable paper that is acceptable nationwide and has an official status. This personal ID card is mainly for identification and is a right of each Haitian. Flaws in the system have made it so that many Haitians are still without their National ID's. Persons wishing to gain their identification papers should contact the National Identification Office, the organization tasked with registering Haitian citizens.

Aside from posing as a Customs official and handing out fake badges to unsuspecting people who believed they were government employees, journalist and radio host, Ernest Laventure Edouard, Moloskot, is also accused of having issued out firearms. He claimed he was hired by President Martelly, but, when summoned by the Government Commissioner, he was a no-show. He had, however, stated that he was answerable only to the President, giving credence to his avoidance of the press, with everyone from Vision 2000's Valery Numa wishing to speak with him.

Within the boundaries of his falsified post as General Coordinator of the Customs, Konpe Moloskot has been accused of handing out fake ID's to so-called workers. Moloskot has previously been an employee of the Customs, under contract working as a Communication Advisor, a post he hasn't held since September of 2012. It is not clear how deep into the mire Moloskot is, as the case also involves allegations against President Martelly and Jojo Lorquet of drug trafficking and money laundering.
