On July 16, 2018, the Holy Father Pope Francis appointed Mgr. Launay Saturné as the new Metropolitan Archbishop of Cap-Haïtian. He will replace Monsignor Max Leroy Mesidor. Mgr. Saturné was the President of the Episcopal Conference of Haiti CEH and Bishop of the Diocese of Jacmel. He made a reputation for being outspoken. He recently denounced the living conditions of Haitians and some decisions of the current Government.

On July 16, 2018, Monsignor Launay Saturne, 54, was appointed as the Bishop of Jacmel, Metropolitan Archbishop of Cap-Haitien (Haiti). Monsignor Eugene Martin Nugent, the Apostolic Nuncio to Haiti confirmed that the Holy Father, Pope Francis has appointed Monsignor Launay Saturné (President of the Episcopal Conference of Haiti CEH and Bishop of the Diocese of Jacmel), as the new Metropolitan Archbishop of Cap-Haitien. He replaced Monsignor Max Leroy Mesidor, enthroned Archbishop of Port-au-Prince in last January. The new appointment came amid a tensed situation between President Moïse and the CEH. Monsignor Saturne was never a choice of President Moïse because of his outspoken nature.

Launay Saturné was born on January 14, 1964 in Delatte (Petit-Goâve) in the Archdiocese of Port-au-Prince. He became ordained priest on March 10, 1991 for the archdiocese of Port-au-Prince. Then he took the responsibility of Vicar of the Sacred Heart parish of Turgeau, at Port-au-Prince (1991-1997), and Director of the Propedeutique [foundation course for first-year University students] House at Jacquet, for the Archdiocese of Port-au-Prince. From 1998 to 2003 he studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, obtaining a doctorate in Dogmatic Theology (Ecclesiology). The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI named him as the Bishop of Jacmel in April 2010. Since November 2017, he is the President of the Episcopal Conference of Haiti.

On April 28, 2012 when he was named Bishop of Jacmel by Pope Benedict XVI, he said, "the construction of physical buildings is not enough; we must rebuild the Haitian people." He called on the government of Haiti to develop vocational training programs, and to make public education available to all young people. He criticized the task of the Provisional Electoral Council that brought Martelly into power.

Pope Francis has named a new envoy to Haiti. Archbishop Eugene Martin Nugent as papal nuncio to Haiti. The Vatican announced the appointment on Saturday.

Pope Francis has selected Archbishop Eugene Martin Nugent as the 'Papal Nuncio' to Haiti as the new envoy to perform the significant works that remain undone to rebuild the nation five years after the devastating earthquake. A 'Papal Nuncio' (officially known as an Apostolic Nuncio) is the head of a diplomatic mission, a permanent representative, generally equals the ecclesiastical rank or an ambassador extraordinary with the full power of independent action on behalf of the Church. Earlier, on 13 February 2010, Nugent had been appointed as the Church's Apostolic Nuncio to Madagascar and Apostolic Delegate to the nearby Comoros Islands , and on 11 March 2010, he was named also as the Apostolic Delegate to Mauritius and Seychelles. Nugent was born in Gurtaderra Scariff County Clare, Ireland on 21 October 1958.

Pope Francis has elevated Mgr. Alphonse Quesnel to the level of Bishop of Fort-Liberté. He has been serving as Port-au-Prince's auxiliary bishop for the last two years.

Quesnel made his initial vows in 1972, then ordained in 1977 in Port-au-Prince. Later he studied in Paris, returning to Haiti where he became Provincial Superior of Monfortains seminary. He moved to Port-au-Paix diocese in 1997, then back to Port-au-Prince as parish priest at St. Louis King of France until his appointment as auxiliary bishop in 2012.

Here is a picture of the Haitian President Michel Martelly meeting Pope Francis in Vatican in February, 2014, The president was in Rome to participate in the elevation of Msr. Chibly Langlois to the rank of Cardinal.

Pope Francis made history by naming the first Haitian cardinal in history.

Pope Francis made the announcement on 22 February 2014 when he stated that he would elevate Langlois to the College of Cardinals.

When Langlois was selected to join the new cardinals at the February 2014 consistory, he was not even an archbishop.

As Haiti has been blessed with its first ever Cardinal in Cardinal Chibly, many may question just what this post denotes. Cardinals are, usually, ordained bishops and are described as princes of the church. They have the duty of making themselves available to the pope and to other individuals, as well as for meetings of the College of Cardinals. Mainly though, Cardinals play their most important role in electing the church's new pope once the old one has passed on.
