Following the Haiti earthquake, President Obama wantd to reassure the Haitian people that the U.S. was totally committed to help Haiti. He pledged to stand by the country as it recovers from the devastating earthquake.

After meeting with the Haitian president Rene Preval, Obama said: The situation on the ground remains dire, That's why, even as the U.S. military responsibly hands off relief functions to our Haitian and international partners, America's commitment to Haiti's recovery and reconstruction must endure and will endure

Here is a picture of Haitian president Rene Preval with former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn Carter.

Jimmy Carter was heavily involved in Haiti politic. In December 1990, Jimmy Carter went to Haiti to convey the message to to Aristide that he predicted that Aristide would lose and urged him to drop out. The final count proved to be the opposite where Aristide won with a majority of 67 percent of the votes.

In September 1994, former president Bill Clinton asked Jimmy Carter go to Haiti and negotiate the departure of Haiti military government in order to restore the presidency of former Haitian president Jean-Bertrand Aristide.

Preval in a picture with several leaders of Latin American nations. Under the government of Rene Preval, there were many economic opportunities created for Haiti. Preval took it on himself to initiate friendly and cooperative relationships with countries such as Cuba, Venezuela, Bahamas, Panama and Bolivia.

Under his government, many economic and medical agreements were signed. The Cuban government increased the number of medical doctors providing services to the Haitians. Venezuela under Hugo Chavez provided financial and energy cooperation. The issue regarding immigration was managed to a certain extent

Following the Haiti earthquake, president Barrack Obama appointed former presidents Georges W. Bush and Bill Clinton

Many people criticized the policy of former president George W. Bush toward Haiti. On January 5, 1991 He announced that the American government will continue to intercept and return Haitian boat people trying to reach the U.S. In the meantime, his policy toward the Cubans who arrived into the U.S. was completely different.

On February 17, 2004, acting under the George W. Bush government, Secretary of State Colin Powel sated that Jean-Bertrand Aristide was the democratically elected president of Haiti. However, just few days later, U.S. military personnel escorted former president Aristide out of Haiti.

The Dominican Republic occupies two-third of the island of Hispaniola, which is shares with Haiti. Spain ceded the colony to France in 1795. In 1801, Toussaint L'Ouverture conquered the Island. In 1808, the country revolted, setting the first republic. In 1814, Spain regained control and in 1821, Spain government was overthrown. In 844 Dominican Republic was conquered by the Haitians.
