US Education Sec. Arne Duncan in Haiti

Room to Learn Program Investment in Haitian Education System

The Haitian government wants to offer free public education to all children on the island, and has begun an Education Fund for this purpose, but it hasn't been well funded.

The U.S. Agency for International Development has chosen Haiti for its $15 million grant program, Room to Learn, so children will have safe access to schooling in areas that are conflict- and crisis-ridden. It is hoped this program will raise literacy rates, which are at 50%.

States Exam Success Rate

After releasing examinations results data for the 6th Fundamental Year on July 26 the Ministry of education has now released updated results for the ten departments. The results indicate that the success rate for all the ten departments was 70% and above with Center having the lowest rate at 70%. North department took the lead according to the statistics with a high of 82% success rate. Artobonite and NorthWest follow closely with 79% and 78% success rates respectively. Nippes recorded a pass of 6,470 candidates admitted on 8,946 which translates to a success rate of 72% to take the second position from last. West had 81,089 candidates out of 105, 141 admissions (77 %) passing the exam while Grand'Anse's success rate was 75 %

Collège Saint-Louis de Bourdon was founded by the congregation of Sisters of Charity of St. Louis in France by Marie Louise Elizabeth de Lamoignon on May 25, 1803. It is a private, Roman Catholic institution located in Bourdon, in Port-au-Prince. the school offers primary school, grades 13 (or k)-6, and secondary schools from grade 7-to Philosophy.

The curriculum of the school originated in Roman Catholicism and a strong sense of civic duty. Students at Collège Saint-Louis de Bourdon are often involved in individual projects requiring presentation in front of an audience. The school also offers a variety of electives subjects such as sewing, cooking, baking, arts and crafts, creative writing, engineering and computer sciences.

The requirements to enroll in the 1st Year Basic, you need: The birth Certificate of the candidate, a passport photo and the final report card. College Sainte Rose de Lima also conducts an entrance examination for classes which evaluates spelling, vocabulary, conjugation, writing and arithmetic skills of the candidate.

The Spiritual Life is also important at College Sainte Rose de Lima. Students are required to attend masses on a regular basis that they themselves have prepared.

The primary and secondary school that is held privately, College Roger A. Anglade, or College Roger Anglade or the CRA was founded in 1957 by Raymonde Anglade.

Raymonde Anglade studied in Ecole Normale d'Instituteurs Elie Dubois. Roger Anglade on the other hand studied at Lycée Pétion until his secondary education. In 1953, Roger Anglade started offering private tuition to students of Saint-Louis de Gonzague and Petit Séminaire College Saint-Martial. The result was outstanding. The students who received private tutoring excelled and Roger Anglade earned quite a reputation.

Mrs. Roger Anglade, born Marie Anne Raymonde Elie, was the co-founder of College Roger Anglade. She was the director of the Primary section of the school

This is College St Francois D'Assise in Port-au-Prince before the 2010 earthquake.

School St. François d'Assise was a victim of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. After several years, the institution is still fighting to rebuild

This is an all girl School that has been run and operated by the Sisters of St. François d'Assise. They serve about 1,500 students annually.

They recently received some donation from Polish sponsors who helped them to provide computes for the underprivileged children in the area. However, the need is much greater than that. School St. François d'Assise is still looking for additional donations to help them acquire additional teaching tools

This is a picture of Nouveau College Bird in Port-au-Prince, established the United Methodist Church in Haiti.

The influence of United Methodist Church in Haiti is dated back during the government of Alexandre Pétion after Haiti independence. Petion wanted to work with the United Methodist Church to establish churches, colleges, schools, clinics and programs.

The Nouveau College Bird was named after the American Methodist missionary Rev. Mark B. Bird. A fire destroyed the building in 1960
Before the 2010 earthquake, Nouveau College Bird provided education to more than 200,000 people annually

Here is a picture of the prestigious school Institution du Sacré-Coeur Turgeau in Haiti.

This is a school that was severely hit by the 2010 earthquake that hit Haiti. The old Sacre Coeur came down. Many activities of the institution were being held under tents. These tents become the classrooms, chapel and offices of the school for the next many months

Since that time construction to rebuild the institution has been underway.
