Gwen Margolis (born October 4, 1934), a Jewish by religion, is a Democratic member of the Florida Senate, representing the District 35, (1980-1992; 2002-2008; 2010-present). She was first elected to the chamber in 2010. In 1990, Margolis became the first woman to lead the chamber as the Senate president. She served in that role until 1992 and won an award for her leadership in the Senate. Earlier to that, she had served in the Florida House of Representatives from 1974 to 1980. Before joining politics, she was a real estate broker and an investor. On June 2, 2016, her 40 years in politics came to an abrupt end with the announcement of her plans to retire from the Florida Senate-- she has dropped her re-election bid. Margolis, at the age of 81 is the longest-serving senator currently in the Florida Legislature.
