Nelson Mandela served a total of 27 years in prison.
he was first sent to Robben Island, and later in Pollsmoor Prison and Victor Verster Prison. He was finally release in 1990following an international campaign that was lobbied for his release.
After he became a free man, Nelson Mandela became ANC President and led negotiations with President F.W. de Klerk to abolish apartheid and establish multi-racial elections. It became a reality in 1994 when he became president.
Upon becoming president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela established a new constitution and initiated the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate past human rights abuses. He also encouraged land reform, combat poverty and expand healthcare services.
