Canada interference in Haitian affairs

Canada interference in Haitian affairs

History of Canada interference in Haitian affairs.

On March 1, 2016, Concertation pour Haiti (Consensus for Haiti) asked Canada not to interfere in Haitian affairs. CPH (founded in 1994) is a grouping of civil society and individual members from Quebec that works to promote human rights and fundamental freedoms in Haiti. It reiterates its support for the Haitian population in crisis. In a note, the CPH has questioned on the involvement of the International Community in Haiti and has called for the respect of each country's national sovereignty. It has requested the Canadian government not to interfere in the ongoing electoral process. The Haitian population must be given the opportunity to determine their own affair without any external intervention. We might remember the initiatives taken by Canada, the U.S and France in 2004 which toppled the government of democratically elected President Aristide.

The new Haitian Prime Minister Nominee Fritz Jean has submitted his document to the 7-member parliament committee for verification and justification of his candidature in anticipation of securing the vote of confidence. However, unlike interim President Privert, Evans Paul considers the appointment of Jean as Prime Minister is unconstitutional. Mr. Privert in order to maintain the safety and security of all public building has prohibited the entry of Evans Paul to the official residence of the Prime Ministers in Bourdon, because Paul has publicly announced his withdrawal from the government.

Little Haiti threatened by Gentrification as sea level rises in Miami

Little Haiti threatened by Gentrification as sea level rises in Miami

Here is a picture of several residents in Little Haiti protesting against gentrification.

Gentrification and rising sea level are threatening to destroy the Little Haiti community. On December 3, 2015, the residents of Little Haiti gathered in Miami's Little Haiti neighborhood to deliver messages about the rapidly changing neighborhood and its preservation: "Say no to gentrification, Little Haiti is not for sale, we want to stay." The Haitian Lawyer Associations are advising the longtime business and property owners of Little Haiti to remain watchful. They should not sign any document without the presence of own lawyer or agree on verbal conversations. Right now, Miami is a red hot market for properties. Once the Wynwood Art District was a home of over 70 galleries and museums and was a haven for local artists in the early 2000s. Unfortunately, the sudden surge in the real estate price, gentrification and higher rent forced many artists and gallery owners of Wynwood to migrate to some other nearby affordable locations. The inhabitants of Little Haiti do not want to follow the footsteps of the Wynwood Art District. Due to the rising sea levels, which could be attributed to the melting of ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica, the sea water is often seeping in into the streets of Miami from underground storm sewers during high tide. This could be a threatening problem for Miami, but could retard the fast process of gentrification in Little Haiti.
