Brooklyn pastor, once honored by N.Y. State Senate, arrested for role in deadly 2014 fire
Luckner Lorient (78), a longtime pastor at Eglise Baptist Clarte Celeste in Flatbush once honored by the New York State Senate and commended by the state senate for his ministry, was arrested at Miami International Airport on Tuesday (July 26, 2016) for his role in a 2014 (November 19, 2014) fire that killed one man and injured 14 others. He was arrested on charges of second-degree manslaughter, second-degree reckless endangerment, criminally negligent homicide, third-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child. Lorient owned a building at 1434 Flatbush Avenue, that housed his church on the ground floor and cramped apartments above which was basically a single resident occupancy apartment. Lorient, had illegally subdivided the floors into 11 multiple cramped, dangerous living spaces for 23 people, according to city records, but at that time Lorient argued his ignorance and blamed the tenants. The fire started with an overheated water cooler and the faulty electrical system, erupted into flames on the second floor. Tenants on the third floor were trapped. The fire killed resident Jeff Frederic, 24.
Former Haitian President and military officer Prosper Avril arrested on charges of plotting against the state,
It made international news in May of 2001 when former Haitian president, Prosper Avril, who was in office from 1988 to 1990, was arrested at a restaurant in popular Petion-Ville, and charged for "plotting against the state." In an almost ironic twist, the scene of the arrest was Avril's book signing for The Black Book of Insecurity, a sort of tell-all focusing on crime victims in Haiti. His arrest that week made the second apprehension of a non-Lavalas party member, a fact which didn't go unnoticed in the then Aristide-run nation.
Dozens of people took the streets in support of Andre Michel, burning barricades in a hope to gain the attention of those in charge of the proceedings. While the prosecutors continue to withhold the reason for Mr. Michel's arrest, the word is that the judge who was presiding was preparing to have Michel moved to the state penitentiary. Things erupted when protestors burst into the office of the bar association and carried their stalwart out of the proceedings. What is clear is that, what one side believes to be a fair trial was a void proceeding to others.
Little is known about the reason why prominent Haitian lawyer Andre Michel was arrested. Prosecutors have yet to disclose the reasons behind the arrest, but a source who claims to have seen the police report states that the actual arrest was for a light traffic violation. If this is so, the remanding of Mr. Michel to the state penitentiary, as is said to have been the plan, should warrant further explanation.
The Haitian president michel Martelly got into his first major problem which is the case of Haitian Deputie Arnel belizaire.
