Here is a picture of Haiti First Ladt, Sophia Saint Remy Martelly. She was born in New York City but decided to run for a senate seat in Haiti

The First Lady Sophia Saint Remy Martelly was born in New York, USA. On the last day of submitting nominations for contesting to be elected to the Senate, she has registered her candidacy for the seat on behalf of her husband's center-right liberal "Tèt Kale Party (PHTK)". Her friends often term her as "the power behind the throne" while her enemies describe her as "iron lady." However, Article 96 (1) of the Haitian constitution may put a stop to all her moves on the presidency issues. The related provision reads like that......" To be elected to the Senate, a person must be a native born Haitian and never have renounced his nationality". She renounced her Haitian citizenship in 1989, because then she used to spend more time in U.S and before 2011, dual citizenship was not permitted in the Haitian constitution. She has registered her nomination, perhaps purposely, on the final day so that it just leaves 3 days before the Department Electoral Offices (BEDs) to receive and review any complaints or objections on the candidacies and publish the names of the approved candidates on May 1. It is a big issue before the BED to decide its credibility.

Here is a picture Candidate Louis Dejoie campaigning in the city of Aquin in 1957

In 1957 when presidential candidate Senator Louis Dejoie stated during the campaign in Aquin that the country was now rueing its lack of focus on farming, even as so many of the nation's past leaders had been learned agronomists, he had only been at the start of what would become today's considerable glut of impoverished people. The governments then failed to strengthen the agricultural industry in the country, leading to the immigration of many Haitian farmers, resulting in a "food drain" that still has ripple effects today.

ID office open in the Diaspora for Haitians

ID office open in the Diaspora for Haitians

The current political situation may be cause for panic as the problem for election in Haiti can not be resolved between the Government of Michel Martelly and the opposition. However, the Haitian Diaspora is getting closer and closer to become a determining factor in the next election in Haiti.

Haiti is moving forward with the plan to have all its citizens counted and to give them the right to vote, no matter where they are. It is in the same concept that the actual government has decided to create this new ID office in the Diaspora for Haitians.

As was promised early last month, an ID office has been set up were Haitians living in the U.S. can go to receive their national identification cards. Located in the consolute for Haiti in Miami, the office will begin operations in December and will issue cards that will serve for 10 years. These cards will have a specific number assigned, just as in the case of the Social Security number, and will afford diaspora members a chance to stay active in the future of their homeland.
