New Florida Bakery in Little Haiti

New Florida Bakery in Little Haiti

New Florida Bakery Inc is located in little Haiti in Miami. They serve the best patties and Haitian bread in Miami. The food you get here is always fresh and its taste takes you back to Haiti instantly. They serve patties in different flavors like chicken, beef, smoked herring, ground turkey and codfish with good levels of spiciness. Haitian breads are similar to Cuban breads but they are denser and amazingly delicate. Never miss to taste their 'pates' or Pah-tays (as they pronounce). It is the Haitian equivalent of pastelitos made of puff pastry and comes in lobster, beef, smoked herring, and ground turkey or codfish filling (ask for morue). Beef and Lobster pastelitos are fresh, warm, and flaky with delicious spicy minced beef or lobster feelings ($1 each). The fillings are pounded to form a smooth paste that is seasoned with garlic, a pinch of cloves, thyme, and a tingle of heat from just the right amount of scotch bonnet peppers (piman bouk). Haitian cuisine is simple and unpretentious and at the same time it is bold and spicy. Haitian patty is an area of cross-cultural cuisine fusion that demonstrates typical African culinary aesthetic paired with French sophistication. "Pah-tays" is an Anglicization of French word "patisserie" which simply means pastries. Cuban patties are famous for sweet fillings but Haitian patties are differently crust and exclusively savory.

The staffs of New Florida Bakery are well conversant in English, French and Creole. They have a huge parking space. Come here with some extra time in our hand because there is always a line at the counter. It is a "Cash Only" shop where anything you buy is always fresh, perfect and inexpensive. New Florida Bakery is a community institution, the golden standard in Haitian baked food for decades. It is a necessary stop for families after Sunday church because their patties are best when they are fresh out of the oven in the morning.

Lamothe in Little Haiti to cry "injustice" by BCED

Lamothe in Little Haiti to cry

Here is a picture taken on June 8th 2015 during a Press Conference at The Little Haïti Cultural Center where candidate, Laurent Lamothe, held a town hall to inform the Haitian Diaspora in Miami about the "injustice" that the Departmental Bureau of Electoral Disputes (BCED) did to him.

Recently on June 8, 2015, one of the presumptive presidential candidates, Laurent Lamothe during a Press Conference in the town hall at Little Haïti Cultural Center has told the Haitian diaspora about how he became a victim of the Departmental Bureau of Electoral Disputes (BCED)'s injustice and expelled discriminatorily from the presidential run because he could not produce a 'certificate de décharge'. He has urged the Haitians living abroad to play a greater active role in reshaping the developments of the country with their influences on political, social and economic fronts. During the meeting, he has advocated for their rights to vote in the next election. According to him, Haitian diaspora contribute for about $2 billion per year, which is very significant for the Haitian economy. It would be a great injustice if we welcome their money, but not their knowledge, their expertise and their will and their right to be significantly involved in the political life in their country,

Demonstration of Haitian belief in Little Haiti for Easter

Demonstration of Haitian belief in Little Haiti for Easter

Here is a picture where thousands of Catholic Haitians took to the streets of Little Haiti during Easter season.

Haitian Easter Celebration & Easter Around The World

In Cuba, the Cuban Christians, in spite of their communist ideology, are far freer to practice their religious faiths. The majority of Cubans are Roman Catholic and about five percent of Cubans are Protestants. There are many churches in Cuba, but you wouldn't see any Easter displays anywhere. It is celebrated in a less publicized way. They call the holiday "Pasqua"(not as Easter), the Spanish word for Passover-- the celebrations are private and faith driven. Most of the believers visit a hilltop near Havana, where the church goes up to celebrate Easter sunrise service.

In Haiti, it is celebrated with a mixture of Catholic and Voodoo traditions. Faith plays a great role in Haitian life. They look to God for every need. The Holy Week is marked by colorful parades and traditional "rara" music is played on bamboo trumpets, maracas, drums and even on coffee cans; the celebration is marked by drumming, chanting and animal sacrifices. They paint their walls and cars in bright colors with the inscription 'merci Jesus!.

Easter celebration in Little Haiti

Easter celebration in Little Haiti

Here is a picture of the cross carrying on God Friday in the streets of Little Haiti in Miami, April, 2015.

The Christian holiday Easter is celebrated with such wonderful rich traditions around the globe, it's fascinating to learn how different Easter traditions can be in different countries (or even within the same country!). In Bermuda, it started when a local teacher from British Army experienced difficulty in explaining Christ's ascension to Heaven. Bermudians celebrate Good Friday by flying home-made kites, eating codfish cakes, and eating hot cross buns. Norwegians celebrate the season through "Easter-Crime" or Paaskekrim. They read crime stories or watch the televised crime detective series on national television. In parts of Northwestern Europe, people lit large bonfires, called Easter Fires. They believe Easter is a time when spring becomes victorious over the winter and the fires were to chase the darkness of winter away. In Sweden, Easter is celebrated with meals of eggs, herring, and Jansson's Temptation (potato, onion and pickled sardines baked in cream). The inhabitants of the Greek island of Corfu, throw clay pots out of their windows.
