The Haitian President Michel Martelly had to take a medical leave. He was in Florida for a surgery in his hands. The medical procedure was quite a secret until everything was done. A week before the crisis with Deputy Belizaire, Michel Martelly left Haiti for the United States. He stated that he was going for medical treatment but without specifying the problem.

Upon his return from his hospitalization in the US where the medical procedure was performed, Michel Martelly told reporters at Toussaint L'Ouverture Airport: "Every time I lifted the left arm I had pain. " "I've come back strong and healthy."
