Out of the 13 candidates who vied to become the next interim president, late on Friday 12, 2016, the list was shortened by a bicameral commission in parliament to '3'-- (i) Senator Dejean Bélizaire, former head of the National Assembly; (ii) Senate President Edgard Fils Leblanc and; (iii) Senate chief Jocelerme Privert. At least nine of the candidates had deposited the required filing fees ($8,414) for this 120 day temporary job. The money deposited was intended to be transferred to the State University of Haiti account. However, the members OPL (Struggling People's Organization) of which Edgard Leblanc Fils is a former coordinator, was divided over the candidacy of Edgard Leblanc Fils. They did not support his candidacy as they are equally opposed to the Privert's candidacy and his following success. The OPL Coordinator Sauveur Pierre Etienne has said that starting with a separation of powers, a lot of principles have been violated by this accord. Privert had played a leading role in making the accord and he is now taking benefit from it.

As per the latest news, the presidential run-off will be held on January 24, 2016-- just two weeks before the deadline for the new president to swear in on February 7. But, there are some problems. The main contestant to this run, second place winner Jude Célestin says he won't take part in the contest. Like other opposition political parties, he also believes that the second election will be nothing but a repetition of the first drama fraught with frauds. Eduardo Gamarra, a political expert from Florida International University in Miami is of opinion that there were frauds in the last election from all participating sides. No single parties to blame, rather many others were actively involved in the felony because of the ineffective electoral system. He also believes that since Martelly cannot run for a second term, he may use Moïse as a sort of puppet in order to stay in power. But he thinks Jovenel would be much more independent than people speculate.

OPL Primary election nomination for President

The candidates for OPL primary include: Francois Anick Joseph, Sauveur Pierre Etienne, Edgard Leblanc Fils,Francisco Delacruz

On Friday, March 28, 2015, the Organization of People in the Struggle (OPL, Organisation du Peuple en Lutte) has submitted four names as nominations for the President of the Republic of Haiti (POH). These four registrants are: present Senators Francois Anick Joseph and Francesco Delacruz, Party Coordinator, Professor Sauveur Pierre Etienne, and former coordinator Edgard Leblanc Fils. Neither of the primary candidates have disclosed their visions publicly, but it is expected that that will remain consistent with the policy line of the OPL as the party dubs itself as "the most organized among the political parties in Haiti". Recently, on an FM radio interview, Sauveur Pierre Etienne has said that this is the first time ever in the history of Haiti that a political party will hold primaries for a presidential election.
