On November 25, 2014, while visiting Haitian Leon Gerard Rehabilitation Institute, the Haitian Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe has reiterated his government's unwavering support for the disabled and the people with less mobility, who have so far remained overlooked from most of the government enhancement programs. He has also said that his government has special attention to the disabled, and the government wants to protect their rights in every sphere of the society. Haitian Leon Gerard Rehabilitation Institute is a referral hospital in Bon-Repos. The Prime Minister appreciated the efforts of its trained staff on taking care of the disabled. He also appreciated the contribution of Brazil and Cuba to the institute and distributed equipment to the people with special needs.

A Haitian delegation which included President Michel Martelly and his Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe traveled to Quito, Ecuador earlier in November to be likewise met and hosted by Ecuadorian members of government. The meeting held at the National Palace Carondelet was meant to help fortify the bonds between the two country as Ecuador has been offering technical, political, humanitarian and economic aid to Haiti. President Martelly spoke directly with President of Ecuador Rafael Correa about the shared interests of education of the Haitian police force, migration and commercial flights between the two countries.

Haitian Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe flew to Washington recently, where he met with US Secretary of State John Kerry to discuss the long-awaited elections in the Caribbean country and the prolonged delay. During the meeting Kerry stated the need for a speedy conclusion to the gridlock caused by the Haitian Senate being unable to vote on the election bill, and Lamothe made assurances that one would be sought. If the country does not have an election by January 12, 2015, the Parliament would be thrown into chaos.

Haiti and Venezuela to Renovate Cap-Haitien Airport

Prime Minister Lamothe said Cap-Haitien International Airport has been re-named Hugo Chavez International Airport after the late Venezuelan president, a generous benefactor of Haiti. He gave over $1 billion to aid the country and his memory lives on in the hearts of Haitians.

Haiti and Venezuela have inked a deal to renovate the airport. Construction carried out by Haitian contractors with oversight by a Cuban-Venezuelan company. A runway has already been completed.
