Judge Raymond Jean-Michel Implicated in Several Controversial Cases

Judge Raymond Jean-Michel, the Dean of the Civil Court of Port-au-Prince, is never new to controversy. He was responsible for assigning the case of kidnapper and drug trafficker Sonson Lafamilia to an embattled judge Lamarre Belzaire who released Sonson Lafamilia and Renel Nelfort on grounds of insufficient evidence. The two persons released were known hardcore criminals involved in many cases of kidnapping, money laundering, sequestration, illicit drug trafficking, murder and criminal conspiracy. Magistrate Belizaire is a lone fighter of justice who has always remained under tremendous pressure and constant threats from every camp. Once he was considered extremely aligned with the Martelly administration, but, however, he earned their ire too through some of his unbiased decisions. When he issued a travel ban against the former President Jean Bertrand Aristide and some of his closest allies and many from the closest allies of the current President Martelly and former Prime Minister Lamothe, his residence was heavily sprayed with bullets by unknown individuals.

The Dean of the Civil Court Jean-Michel is also responsible to drive the late Judge Jean Serge Joseph at the law offices of Gary Lissade to a meeting with President Martelly, Minister of Justice Jean Renel Sanon and Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe where the judge was heavily threatened to stop the continuation of a case against the presidential family involving First Lady Sophia Martelly and her son Oliver Martelly on charges of corruption, embezzlement, and usurpation of titles. The judge was so threatened there, he became a totally panicked and broken man. He died of a massive brain hemorrhage on the third day, July 13, 2013. The autopsy report of his body was never released to the public.

On Wednesday, April 22, 2015, the CSJP has removed Judge Raymond Jean-Michel from his seat of the Dean of the Civil Court of Port-au-Prince for his alleged involvement in the Woodly "Sonson Lafamilia" Etheart release trial. After the hearing of the CSJP, Judge Raymond has acknowledged his fault. In an interview with Le Nouvelliste, the CSPJ Councilor Dilia Lemaire has told, we have heard his explanation, now his fate is under consideration of the Supreme Council.
