More than 250,000 illegal weapons in circulation in Haiti

It has been estimated that Haiti has more than 250,000 illegal weapons in circulation causing insecurity.

Weapons Destroyer to cut down on Firearms in Haiti

HNP are endeavoring to decrease illegal firearms in circulation. With the help of the Canadian Police they set out to destroy 195 weapons at Freres Police Academy.

Police Commissioner Therriault donated a $50,000 weapons destroyer, capable of destroying 500 weapons daily. Currently there are 250,000-plus illegal handguns and assault rifles in circulation.

Therriault said ". . . the need to strengthen the national management and control system of gun licenses . . ." is imperative.

Canada denounces possession of assault rifle by Deputy Arnel Belizaire

Here is a picture taken during a protest in Port-au-Prince where Haitian Deputy Arnel Belizaire was confronting both a Canadian and Brazilian member of the MINUSTAH force.

Millions have seen the image of Haitian Deputy Arnel Belizaire brandishing an assault rifle while speaking to members of MINUSTAH at a demonstration. The image has led to much debate, including the letter to the President of the Chamber of Deputies, sent by the new Canadian Ambassador to Haiti, Paula Caldwell St-Onge. In her letter, she criticizes the deputy, calling for Stevenson Jacques Thimoleon to bring his parliamentarians who have no respect for Haiti's laws to order. For his part, Belizaire has said he had recovered the gun after MINUSTAH soldiers began firing shots into the non-violent group of protesters.

Recently, Arnel Belizaire launched an Operation called "Janl Parcel Pass." meaning he doesn't care how it ends up. He said that after several manifestations ended up with the Haitian Police getting involved to break the with tear gaz and violence

When Congolese slaves were brought to Haiti to work the plantations, they imported a tribal martial arts form, Tire Machèt.

On the eve of the Haitian Slave Revolt, Tire Machèt was resurrected as an inexpensive type of weaponry the rebel slaves could use to slaughter plantation owners.

When the Haitian Army saw the value of Tire Machèt, they quickly adopted it as a skill to be mastered in basic training.

The Créole martial arts form, Tire Machèt, has its roots in African tribal traditions. Brought to Haiti by Congolese slaves, it gained ascendency during a period of isolation Haiti endured from the rest of the world.

Prior to the Haitian Slave Revolt, Tire Machèt became weaponry for rebels to destroy their masters' plantations. The Haitian Army adopted Tire Machèt as part of its training and it has evolved to become a modern martial arts skill imbued with sacredness.

US is considering lifting of embargo on the sale of weapons in Haiti

It may have not been noticeable, however, since 1993 Haiti has been under an embargo for the sale of weapons. This was imposed by the US government in 1993, following the military coup against former President Jean Bertrand Aristide. Now with stability improving in the country and a need to create a more professional Police and Military force to deal with crimes there is a need for the lifting of embargo on the sale of weapons.

The Assistant Secretary of State for the United States, William Brownfield, who visited Haiti in December 2011 gave the impression that the US government is willing to consider that. To reassure the US Government, Mario Andrésol presented a five-year plan to make Haiti national Police more effective in protecting the Haitian population
