Here is the picture of a Christmas celebrationat that took place a the National Palace on December 23, 2014 with President Michel Martelly and First Lady Sophia Martelly

Children and other patrons, decked out in the seasonal colors of red and green, gathered in the courtyard of the National Palace to celebrate the Christmas season with their Prime Minister, Michel Martelly. Also present was his wife, Sophia, whose work for the past four years has brought the over 3,000 kids, many of whom have disabilities, to the festivities. The event facilitated the playing of games, the eating of food and the giving of gifts. President Martelly and his wife used the occasion to wish the public good health and prosperity for the season.

An annual event in the South of the country, Marche de Noel du Grand Sud or Christmas Market of the Great South - Haiti.

Government Funds Annual Great South Christmas Market

For many year Jacmel is holding its Great South Christmas Market. Southeast Tourism Director, Joan Raton, officiated at the opening ceremonies. The event will run from December 12th to the 14th.

Moro Creations and Women Artisans will showcase their wares, and entertainment will happen at Jacmel's tourist port and the Convention Center.

Southeast Tourism Directorate has spent almost $3 million gourdes for the event, while the Ministry of Tourism has kicked in $2.5 million gourdes.

How People In Haiti Celebrate Christmas

Christmas is known in Haiti as 'Jwaye Nowe' (in Creole) or 'Joyeux Noël' (in French). It is the happiest time of the year when all sections of the society get involved in the festival, fix and redecorate their homes ready for Christmas. It is celebrated in a big way with great pomp and show. It is a day when everybody seems to be in a happy mood and celebrate with a lot of eating and drinking, singing and playing. Christmas songs and carols float everywhere in the air. Fireworks, firecrackers and gunshots can be heard all hours of the day and night and houses remain open with the lights till midnight. There are organizations like "Haiti with Love" and "Compassion International" who mobilize their resources to make Christmases special for impoverished children who do not receive any gifts or live in an environment where the joys of Christmas never reach. They also explain and teach them the meaning of Christmas and how it is worth celebrating.

Here is a picture of two Haitian children posing with their Christmas gifts. They are so happy to receive these gifts that were donated by volunteers from the United States.

These are probably the only gifts they will receive for Christmas.

She is looking at her mother who is beside her and looking at Santa Clause. She does not know whether to smile or to be scared.

Here is a picture of several fanales that were constructed for Christmas in Haiti. Fanals come in different forms and shapes. They are sold in the streets.

This tradition of Fanale in Haiti originated from the people who used to work at night in the dark. In order to see where they were going, they used candles, and the fanale came as a way to protect the candle from the wind. The tradition evolved in Haiti and became a Christmas tradition.
