Newborn male circumcision, a way to fight HIV/ Aids in Haiti

Newborn male circumcision, a way to fight HIV/ Aids in Haiti

A new way to fight sexually transmitted diseases in Haiti such as HIV Aids. The introduction of newborn male circumcision.

One would think any procedure that had the promised potential to reduce the risk of HIV/AIDS by up to 60 percent would be wholeheartedly adopted by the government of Haiti. First Lady Sophia Martelly did, and thanks to the efforts of the man who convinced her, an infectious diseases physician from UCLA, Jeffrey Klausner, some Haitian doctors have been trained in the practice that had been largely left behind in the country. With a team he trained to impart the knowledge of the procedure, Klausner spearheaded the setting up of a surgical facility in the capital aimed at offering contraceptive and protective solutions.

Center For Haitian Studies

Center For Haitian Studies

The Center for Haitian Studies, Health, and Human Services, Inc. (CHS) was created following the confusion about the causes AIDS epidemic in the 1980s. Haitians were one of the group of people unjustly labeled as high risk for AIDS and also for the transmission of the disease. Haitians in turn felt at the time that they were victims of this because of their status as immigrants and black. The felt that the larger society did not want them to be in the United States.

With the creation of the Center for Haitian Studies, Haitians were more willing to seek help there as this was a Haitian facility witht e goal to help Haitians. The Haitian who were affected by the AIDS virus were more willing to come to such a facility to get treatment.

From those early and shaky beginning, Center for Haitian Studies has managed to become a real actor in the lives of many Haitians in Miami-Dade county as well as to other ethnic community of South Florida.

The Center for Haitian Studies is now considered one of the few successful counseling program for Haitian Americans affected by HIV/AIDS. The center now offers a wide range of medical services in the Haitian community, including: , OB/GYN,, Pediatric care, Family Medicine, HIV, AIDS, HIV Testing, HIV Counseling, Outreach, Education, Doctor, Health, Clinic

Fight against AIDS in Haiti Succeeding

Fight against AIDS in Haiti Succeeding

Sida, mwen pap pran, mwen pap bay campaign
Present at the recent World AIDS Day celebration in ST. Therese Park, Pétion-Ville, the Head of State, along with the First Lady, addressed the crowd on the issue of the nation's fight against the AIDS epidemic. Dr. Florence D. Guillaume, also in attendance, spoke of the continued commitment of the Ministry of Public Health and Population to the fight against HIV/AIDS. Also in attendance were many representatives from foreign organizations and partners in the fight against the deadly disease.

Haiti's Ministry of Public Health and Population has good news to report on the AIDS epidemic in Haiti. Haitians testing positive for the HIV virus have dropped 10% in the last nine years.

Patient enrollment for treatment has gone up, on average, 20% for the same period. In 2013 treatment enrollment soared to 44% from 2012. Several international agencies have worked to prevent, care for, and treat AIDS victims. The President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief has played a major role in combating the disease.

Prostitution in the rural areas of Haiti

Prostitution in the rural areas of Haiti

The greatest part of the current prostitution industry takes place in the rural areas and not in the more populous towns and cities. This is perhaps why it has been able to pervade into normal society with such efficiency. While it seems to have become more widely acknowledged, if not accepted, it is still a far cry from being safe or healthful. An outbreak of cholera may soon take the back seat to a veritable AIDS or STI epidemic.
