Musicians Esteemed with Haiti's Highest Award

Prime Minister Lamothe and President Martelly bestowed the Honor and Merit plates on musicians Fabrice Rouzier, Clement Belizaire, and Eric Virgal at the National Palace for their enrichment of Caribbean and Haitian music.

Martelly, in a moment of nostalgia, said, "Our reunion today reminds me the years of performance with you on stage" He also made special mention of Martiniquan Virgil whose songs ". . . make him a son . . . of Haiti . . . through . . . songs like 'Gonaives' and 'Yon ti zetwal pou Ayiti'."

The Creole Choir of Cuba celebrate the history of their Haitian descendants

Here is a picture of the famous group by the name of Creole Choir of Cuba. They are Cubans of Haitian descendant comprised of: Rogelio Torriente, Fidel Miranda, Teresita Miranda, Marcelo Luis, Dalio Vital, Emilia Diaz Chavez, Yordanka Fajardo, Irian Montejo, Marina Fernandes and Yara Diaz..

For decades, thousand of Haitians fled to the isles of nearby Cuba, and today the seeds have borne musical fruit. The Creole Choir of Cuba is made up of 10 members who are more than eager to show off their Creole and Haitian heritage. The passion for Haitian sounds was kicked into gear when, in 1996, they visited the neighboring country to take in their first Haitian festival. Since then they have been infusing their cuban ancestral beats with those of the country of their descendants.

Godwin Louis Wins Praise at Monk Jazz Competition

Godwin Louis, Haitian-American saxophonist, was a finalist at the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition.

Louis's uncle introduced him to jazz icons Cannonball Adderly and Sonny Rollins by sending Louis CDs when he was a boy.

Charlie Parker is Louis's biggest influence as well as the Caribbean rhythms he grew up with.

Louis says the fans he has attracted on Facebook and Twitter, and the Monk competition have been "absolutely a dream come true."

Gifted Haitian-American Jazz Singer Cecile Salvant

Haitian-American Cécile Salvant is a jazz singer, whose emergence onto the music scene has created a stir.

She entered the Thelonious Monk jazz-singing competition and won. Later, Salvant released WomanChild. Her CD contains a pastiche of blues standards and Parisian torch songs.

Salvant has an ability to imbue her phraseology with prisms of color. Musicians love her, crafting arrangements that accentuate her voice. And they look forward to watching her mature into one of the great jazz vocalists.

Although she is not very popular in Haiti and among Haitians in the Diaspora yet, Stevy Mahy is an international artist.

Stevy Mahy was born in Paris but spent part of his childhood in Guadeloupe where her parents are from. She is a true Creole woman.
growing up in a family where both mother and father are musicians and singers, it is only natural that Stevy Mahy would be in love with music. She recorded "mama DEPI or pati" or "I want a little brother "with his mother, that the age of 9 years.

Owning his first guitar at the age of 7, he started learning to play and dreamed to become a superstar. While growing up in Haiti, Ralph Condé was exposed to a variety of guitar players. However, he was mainly influenced by people like Jimmy Hendrix, Georges Benson,Lee Retenour,Steve Vai and some Kompa musicians from Haiti.
