Who killed Emperor Jean-Jacques Dessalines, what was the motif?

Who killed Emperor Jean-Jacques Dessalines, what was the motif?

There is a mystery around the death of Emperor Jean-Jacques and the more I hear about it, the more confused it gets.

I learned in school that Jean-Jacques Dessalines was assassinated at Pont Larnage, now known as Pont-Rouge, on 17 October 1806 on his way to fight some rebels. However, other historians have come with different takes on the assassination of the Emperor. We know that two other leaders in the Haitain revolution, Alexandre Pétion and Henri Christophe, both were disaffected members of Dessalines' administration.

A theory that has been circulating explains that On October 17, a soldier by the name of Garat was the first one to fire on Jean-Jacques Dessalines in Pont Rouge. As he missed his target, he instead killed Dessalines'horse. This group of historians confirmed that General Yayou was the one who actually killed him.

Yet, there is another theory that explained that a fact that the Emperor was assassinated not in Pont rouge but at the residence of Alexandre Petion. These historians that he was assassinated by Pétion himself during a gala.

After all these, the question remains: Who killed Emperor Jean Jacques and what was the motif?

Could a marriage between Célimène Dessalines and Alexandre Pétion spare the Emperor?

Could a marriage between Célimène Dessalines and Alexandre Pétion spare the Emperor?

The slave revolution in Saint Domingue (Haiti) could not have been possible without a union of Blacks and Mulatos in the island. After Haiti's independence, the leader of the revolution, Jean-Lacques Dessalines, had this great idea that his daughter could help bridge the gap between Alexandre Petion and himself by proposing that his daughter would marry Alexandre Petion, the Leader of the Mulato force who fought side by side with him. He also saw this as a way to bring both Blacks and Mulatos together.

Marie Françoise Célimène Dessalines was born on October 2, 1789. She was the daughter of Jean-Jacques Jacques I. Dessalines , the first Emperor of Haiti and Marie-Claire Happy Bliss GUILLAUME , Empress consort of Haiti. At the time, she was romantically involved with young Captain Chancy, a nephew of Toussaint Louverture.

It was reported that the marriage proposition between Marie Françoise Célimène Dessalines and Alexandre Petion was declined by Petion. He would later, according to some historians, take part of the assassination plot against Jean-Jacques Dessalines.

Could the marriage between Célimène and Pétion actually saved Emperor Dessalines' life?

Origin of Rice in Haiti

Origin of Rice in Haiti

It was once incorrectly believed that Europeans who enslaved Haitians brought first rice to the island. But Professor Judith Carney believes otherwise because West Africans used to cultivate rice prior to the enslavement of Haitians by the Europeans. It is evident that some West Africans brought certain varieties of rice with them to the Americas. And since Haitians are mostly descendants of West African people, there is a possibility that Haitian rice is of West African origin. Traditionally, there are two types of rice are grown in Haiti: Mountain rice (subsistence crops) and Swamp Rice (consumption in urban areas). Presently, there are several varieties of rice are grown and available in Haiti: Sheila, Shelda, Crete, Madame Gougous, TCS-10 (with Taiwanese assistance), Prosequisa-4 (a Dominican variety) and Vietnamese rice (bagged as 10 sou 10 or 10/10, perfect score). The USAID project of "International Rice Research Institute" at Madagascar is testing and has introduced several varieties rice in Haiti.

The Haitian Population in the Bahamas

The Haitian Population in the Bahamas

A substantial number of immigrant Haitian workers live in the worst condition in Nassau and other shantytowns in Bahamas with limited sewage, without a safe water supply or electricity and any other basic human amenities albeit they found it's a better place than their home country. Most of them work in service sectors. An unofficial estimate suggests that, they consist 10 to 25% of the country's population-- the largest and most visible ethnic minority. But, the majority of them are illegal immigrants. Haitians have been migrating since the 1960s, but the numbers increased considerably in the late 1980s and 1990s. The government of the Bahamas is going to implement a new policy on immigration from November 1, 2014 that says the government will no longer accept any application of work visas from illegal immigrant. Persons without legal status will not be permitted to work in the country anymore and those intending to do so will be will be arrested, charged and deported. Only children of legal immigrants may have access to school and right to work and live. Foreigners living in the Bahamas must have a valid passport of own home country. Bertin Louis. A U.S professor of anthropology considers this new rule creating the fears of persecution and repatriation without any opportunity to claim asylum is "clearly xenophobic".
