Haiti National Council of Government

Haiti National Council of Government

February 07, 1986 Port-au-Prince, Haiti: Here is a picture of the members of the National Council of Haitian Government, also called military-civilian government or junta that replaced former Haitian dictator Jean-Claud Duvalier. This picture was taken during the ceremony instituting the new team. Members include: Colonel Max Valles, Colonel William Regala, Lieutenant General Henry Namphy, Alix Cineas, Gerard Gourgue, Colonel Prosper Avril.

The National Council of Government was the ruling body of Haiti from 1986 to 1988. Henri Namphy (born November 2, 1932 in Cap-Haïtien) was a political figure and Haitian general. He served as the President of Haiti's such interim ruling body, the National Council of Government, from February 7, 1986 to February 7, 1988. Again, Namphy served as the President of Haiti (from June 20, 1988 to September 17, 1988) until his deposition by a Haitian coup d'état. The National Council of Government was formed as a joint military and civilian provisional government following the exile of President for Life Jean-Claude Duvalier. The council consisted of a President, Lieutenant General Henri Namphy, and five Members, three from the military (Colonel Max Valles, Colonel Prosper Avril and Colonel William Regala) and two civilians (Maitre Gérard Gourgue and Mr. Alix Cinéas). Resignation of Gerard Gourgue on March 20, 1986, led to a commotion among this small group and a new National Council of Government was formed within a month with three members (Colonel William Regala, Mr. Jacques François from April 1987 and Me. Luc D. Hector from February 1988) and 13 ministers. This ruling body took two important measures: rehabilitation of the blue and red Haitian flag on February 17, 1986 and the dissolution of the Volunteers of National Security on February 15, 1986.

Little Haiti, officially a Neighborhood in Miami

Little Haiti, officially a Neighborhood in Miami

May 26, 2016, the day Little Haiti is officially put on the Map as a Neighborhood in Miami. With resolution sponsored by Commissioner Keon Hardamon, all the commissioners of City of Miami voted in favor of the resolution.

Little Haiti is the cultural heart for the Haitian Diaspora in the Miami neighborhood. So far there was no true definition of Little Haiti as it was very much subjective without any formal boundary-- an area broadly defined by the city as running from 38th Street to 79th Street between Interstate 95 and the Florida East Coast Railway, although the maps and official city registries use to acknowledge it to be much smaller with southern and northern borders as 54th and 82nd streets. Recently, on Thursday, May 26, 2016, , the Miami-Dade Municipal Commission unanimously voted in favor of designating 'Lemon City' as 'Little Haiti'. 'Little Haiti' will have the boundaries roughly between 54th Street and 79th Street, and Northwest Sixth Avenue and Northeast Second Avenue. The announcement came after a long sixteen years' demand and this victory was almost impossible without the effort of four former district commissioners. It was a sixteen year old argument over the idea of an official 'Little Haiti' and exactly, where its boundaries should be drawn.

Laurent Lamothe, Evans Paul hit with travel ban

Laurent Lamothe, Evans Paul hit with travel ban

Here is a picture of two former Prime Ministers Laurent Lamothe and Evans Paul. They were hit with travel ban along with 13 Ministers in the Michel Martelly government

As per the news report dated June 2, 2016, by order of Prosecutor Danton Leger, nine former Haitian electoral officials and 11 Cabinet ministers of former President Michel Martelly's administration have been forbidden to leave the country. The order came from the new Government Commissioner of Port-au-Prince Danton Leger, shortly after the release of Verification Commission's report recommending October's presidential first-round election conducted by the former Martelly administration should be "restart from zero" -- because, it was marred by serious irregularities, grave inconsistencies, and massive fraud; only 9% of the total vote cast has been found to be valid. The violation of the Act and commitment of fraud was masterminded at a "high level". The names of two Prime Ministers of Martelly administration Laurent Lamothe and Evans Paul were found on the lists, forbidden to leave the country. As per Justice Minister Camille Junior Edouard, the interim government had nothing to do with the prosecutor's decision. Prosecutor Leger did not respond to a request for comment.

The flags of Haiti and the United States of America

The flags of Haiti and the United States of America

Here is a picture of the flags of Haiti and the United States of America.

According to a 2012 U.S. Global Leadership Report, 79% of Haitians approve of U.S. leadership, while 18% disapprove and 3% are uncertain. It is the highest rating for any surveyed country in the Americas. Haiti has maintained a long-standing relationship with the United States, because it was Haiti's primary trading partner for exports and imports, the primary target of Haitian emigration and the most important source of foreign assistance. The U.S. has been Haiti's largest donor since 1973. Between FY 1995 and FY 2003, the U.S. contributed more than $850 million in assistance to Haiti. Since 2004, the U.S. has provided over $600 million for improving governance in Haiti. One of the reasons for the U.S's interest in Haiti arose chiefly because of Haiti's proximity to the Panama Canal and Central America, controlling Windward Passage that could disrupt maritime traffic. In August 1989, President George Bush restored US$10 million in food aid to Avril government. Following the 2010 earthquake, with the U.S. and international supports, Haiti has seen a steady recovery. The U.S had provided more than $4.5 billion of assistance to Haiti to support its life-saving post-disaster relief as well as long-term recovery, reconstruction, and development programs. U.S. taxpayers have contributed some $33 million for impoverished Haiti to hold elections during this cycle. Haiti's transition to a strong democracy is always important to the United States. The flags of Haiti and the U.S will flutter together.
