An Innovative Answer to Haiti's Fuel Problem
Haiti has a serious environmental problem, deforestation. Great quantities of forestland have been decimated to provide fuel for cooking needs. Non-profit International Lifeline Fund (ILF) has an answer.
They have designed a stove that will burn recycled paper molded into briquettes. Not only will it decrease using wood for fuel, it will also curb rampant waste.
ILF will market briquettes and green stoves to both citizens and businesses. ILF will next erect a paper-briquette-producing plant on the island.
Good Demen Haiti Creates Plastic Flowers for Carnival
Good Demen Haiti (GDH) is an arts organization dedicated to improving the lives of at-risk youth. Its activity is creation of personal, household, and business products made from recycled plastic.
This year GDH is making costumes and accessories for the Carnival of Flowers. House artist, Gumo Lormeus, will instruct how to create flowers from recycled plastic bottles in a five-step process.
GDH's purpose is to keep at-risk youth off the streets of Port-au-Prince and teach them life skills.
Good Demen Haiti Teaches Creative Skills to At-Risk Youth
Good Demen Haiti (GDH), established in 2004, is a program for at-risk youth. A volunteer arts organization, it seeks to keep kids off the streets.
Artist Gumo Lormeus teaches the teens how to create art objects from recyclables. This year they will make costumes for the Carnival of Flowers, using plastic bottles. The order from the Ministry of Tourism is for 400 whistles, 200 dresses, and 200 hats. GDH also produces products for public and private consumption.

The Ministry of Tourism (MOT) has contracted with volunteer group, Good Demen Haiti (GDH), to provide Carnival costumes for 2013. The members, at-risk youth, design and assemble dresses, hats, and accessories from recycled plastic bottles.
Group leader, Gumo Lormeus, teaches how to deconstruct plastic bottles and create plastic flowers in a five-step process.
MOT has put in an order for 400 whistles and 200-each hats and dresses, to be made from plastic materials.
Le Matin Goes Out of Business, Maybe Forever
Le Matin, one of the oldest newspapers in Haiti, has shuttered its business, due to mounting operational costs, cutting profits drastically.
Le Matin was known as a newspaper that engaged different perspectives on the issues of the day. It had a faithful audience in the capital of Port-au-Prince and in some rural areas.
It is not known the duration of the shutdown, whether it is temporary until funds can be raised to start printing again, or will the shutdown be a permanent situation.
Signal FM Radio Honored by North Miami Mayor Lucie Tondereau

North Miami mayor, Lucie Tondereau, flew to Haiti on an invitation by the government. The reason for the visit is her electoral victory due to media support.
Signal FM Radio was honored by Tondereau for its part in influencing her win.
At an awards ceremony, during her speech, Tondereau said channel 90.5 has the largest audience among the Diaspora. Tondereau then presented the award plaguette to station owner, Mario Viau, thanking him.
Designer Stella Jean to Show Collection at Armani Teatro
Designer, Giorgio Armani, has chosen Haitian-Italian designer, Stella Jean, to show her Fall 2014 collection at Armani's salon, Armani Teatro. Jean has been selected for her beautifully constructed ethnic-influenced prints. An award given by fashion magazine, Vogue Italia, to her for originality brought her to Armani's attention.
She will show during Fall Milan Fashion Week. She expresses gratitude to Armani he has selected her as the first women's wear designer to show at Armani Teatro.
