Manno Emmanuel Charlemagne, a Haitian activist-singer-songwriter-guitarist acoustic and ex-Mayor of Port-au-Prince, was born there in 1948. Charlemagne was raised in Carrefour, a suburb of Port-au-Prince, where dual musical influences shaped him as a musician, the peasant class introducing him to their roots music, and the Catholic school to choir hymns.
