Hospital Sacré Coeur, Milot

Hospital Sacré Coeur, Milot

Hospital Sacré Coeur (HSC) with 122 beds is the largest private hospital in the town of Milot in the Northern Haiti. It was constructed by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart of the Montreal Province (founder of CRUDEM or Center for the Rural Development of Milot) in 1986. However, 'the Hôpital Sacré Coeur' they built was a simple building with an operating room without any equipment or surgeon. The building gradually took the shape of a real hospital when Dr. Ted Dubuque, a surgeon from St. Louis, Missouri joined there in 1986. Dr. Dubuque had promised God that if he recovers from a near fatal illness that he was once suffering, he would spend his life helping others. He was cured and kept his promise. He traveled to Milot, spent six months at HSC and performed 250 surgeries during his first visit. The hospital statistics for the year 2013: 49,743 outpatient visits, 5,906 hospital admissions, 119,076 laboratory tests, 2,966 X-rays processed, 1,236 newborn deliveries, 1,956 surgical procedures, 11,143 patients tested for HIV, 178 children treated as inpatients for severe malnutrition. Every year CRUDEM publishes the schedule of their visiting surgeons on their website.

Alyans Sante Borgne

Alyans Sante Borgne

Before establishing the Alyans Sante Borgne (ASB) or Borgne Health Alliance clinic in 2006, the only clinic and laboratory for the people in Borgne was run by H.O.P.E (Haiti Outreach Pwoje Espwa). ASB was formed with the partnership of Haitian Ministry of Health under the management of H.O.P.E. Today, the hospital is functioning with 4 physicians, 70 staff and a team of nurses and other health workers and technicians who are mostly local born and have a bond of love for the organization.

The hospital Alyans Sante is constantly striving to attain its primary goal to provide basic and preventive medicine to the entire community; however, they could not yet achieve that due to paucity of fund. ASB has developed specific programs on some of the major health risks at Borgne which are associated with childbirth, neo-natal, post-partum complication and child death. To extend their hands of assistance they have introduced mobile clinics in remote areas.

Hospital La Providence, Gonaïves

Hospital La Providence, Gonaïves

'Hospital La Providence' is the only hospital in Gonaïves, the third city with 300,000 inhabitants in Haiti by population. The hospital was devastated by Hurricane Jeanne in 2004. Since then, it is functioning in a deteriorating condition with lack of funds and unpredictable power. We may remember that a development plan for the hospital had been undertaken under the funding from the Canadian International Development Agency to the tune of $17 million through the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). The construction work for the building at Morne Blanc has been awarded to Abantia, a Spanish group, in consortium with Buildings Cots and Claret. The new building will have an area of 10,380 square meters and a capacity of 200 beds.

Further, Hospital La Providence in Gonaïves will have one emergency care center, pharmacy, laboratory, four hospitalization blocks, one surgical block, maternity and intensive care unit specially dedicated for newborns. Recently, on 23 May, 2014, the Embassy of Mexico has sanctioned $2.5 million for Haiti with the Ministry of Public Health for installation of 4,000 square meters of solar panels to provide 200 KW power to four priority areas of the Hospital La Providence.

Hospital Claire-Heureuse, Dessalines Haiti

Hospital Claire-Heureuse, Dessalines Haiti

The Hospital Claire Heureuse, located 100 miles north of Port-au-Prince was first opened in October 1986. Prior to this, there was a small non-functional government medical center in the same location. After several requests and appeals by the then inable local government, the Free Methodist National Church agreed to take control of the unkempt health center previously run by inefficient, absentee physicians. Today, Hospital Claire-Heureuse in Marchand Dessalines is also known as Dessalines Rural Health Care Project or D.R.H.P. With 60 beds of inpatient facility, the hospital is a thriving center for local inhabitants with tuberculosis, HIV, maternity, neo and postnatal care treatments. Every day, the out-patient clinic is visited by about 100 patients. With its 87% Haitian staff, it delivers about 1300 babies a year and offers laboratory, ultrasound and X-ray services. They have a Red Cross transfusion center and receive USAID funding.

Work of Cuban Medical Brigade in Haiti

Work of Cuban Medical Brigade in Haiti

The Work carried out by the Cuban Medical Brigade in Haiti is only second to none.

Among the many donor nations that helped Haiti in treating the earthquake victims, the name of Cuba with its medical teams will always remain at the forefront. They were the first to set up medical facilities among the debris and to revamp hospitals immediately after the earthquake struck. A medical brigade of 1,200 Cubans with its doctors and nurses had operated all over earthquake-torn and cholera-infected Haiti, they worked non-stop, day and night, with operating rooms open 18 hours a day which could easily put US efforts to shame. The Cuban Medical Brigade is a part of Fidel Castro's international medical mission. It has won the hearts of many socialist and underprivileged nations, but little international recognition.

Hospital Sainte-Thérèse de Hinche

Hospital Sainte-Thérèse de Hinche

How Hospital Sainte-Thérèse de Hinche was created. While traveling to Haiti in 2003 as a part of a medical team, Ms. Nadene Brunk of Richmond, Virginia Area (who specializes in midwifery and currently the Executive Director at Midwives for Haiti) witnessed the lack of resources and skilled professionals to assist pregnant women. She was shocked and to provide a permanent solution, she formed a small team of medical professionals, volunteer midwives and returned to Haiti. Later on, at the request of a Haitian community leader, with nine students, she opened a nurse training program in Hinche. After a long hard work and overcoming many challenges, their effort "Midwife for Haiti" got recognized as a nonprofit organization in 2006. Today, although Hospital Sainte-Thérèse de Hinche still looks worn, it is clean, adequately equipped and staffed with 16 skilled graduate birth attendants, medication shortage are no more regular incidence. In 2013, they have attended over 2,100 births.
