Since this nomination, there have been lot of comments made by various sectors of the population.

Evans Paul Activists Awarded $41 Million in Punitive Damages

In 1989, former Haitian President, Proper Avril, authorized the torture and arrest of six political activists, including Evans Paul, then-Port-au-Prince Mayor.

By 1991, Avril faced a lawsuit brought by CCR, who sued under the Alien Tort Statue. Lawyers used Filartiga v. Pena-Irala case to mount their defense.

In 1994, Evans et al received $41 million in punitive damages. This marked the first time a Haitian dictator had been convicted of human rights abuses ever.

The former CNN host Soledad O'Brien, managed to get an interview from the former Haitian dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier, also known as "Baby Doc." He appeared frail but explained to the host for a first segment for Al Jazeera America that under his government, Haiti was much better in term of security and economic development. In that same segment, Soledad O'Brien also interviewed a former political prisoner, Duval, who had a totally different view of the condition under the Duvalier regime
Jean-Claude Duvalier ruled Haiti until he was ousted in 1986. During his government, he introduced cosmetic changes to the condition of the population.

He was ousted in 1986 but returned returned to Haiti on January 16, 2011 after his exile in France. On February 28, 2013, Duvalier pleaded not guilty to charges of corruption and human rights abuse.

There are many unfounded claims surrounding the town of Casale. These include reports of a visit from the Pope in 1983. While some claim he stopped at the site during his short visit, others still say there is no documentation of this. Adding to their reason for dissent, the unlikelihood of such a visit in the 10 hour visit to Haiti the pope made on March 9th. Also up for debate was whether the reports of the number of Polish defectors were greatly exaggerated to promote the cause of Dessalines and allay fears of an 'all white' massacre.
