While the reception is an affair replete with the kinds of food that are most popular and pleasing to the Haitian palate, the well-known tradition of cake cutting is not practiced by some Haitians. A couple takes their wedding cake home and will cut it at home days after the actual ceremony and reception. This is one of the traditions that does not translate well when being incorporated into other countries, as the cutting and the sharing of the wedding cake can be quite significant in other cultures.

Haiti Anti Michel Martelly and Laurent Lamothe protest

Haiti Anti Michel Martelly and Laurent Lamothe protest

On the same day That President Michel Martelly made a public announcement to accept the recommendations of the Commission, major protests are taken place all over the Haitian Capital to demand his resignation

Président Michel Martelly accepts the recommendations of the Commission

The announcement was made during a short telecasted speech made by the President, at which the Prime Minister was present, though he did not speak. Despite these assurances from the President, many noted that he did not say the Prime Minister would step down. The uncertainty has had some doubtful as, noted by one patron who listened to the broadcast, the government has failed to fulfill promises before.

While Martelly stated unequivocally that Lamothe had been pivotal in driving the country's progress, the escalating spate of anti-government protests meant action is necessary on the part of the government. As such, the resignations of the secondary parties have been recommended to take place before December 25, 2014. These steps would allow for the formation of a new consensus government. It is to be seen if this course will appease the masses, many of whom believe the long delay is a ploy by the administration to have President Martelly free to rule by decree upon the dissolution of parliament in January.

Consultative Commission Urges Opposition to Declare a Truce

President Martelly has abided by a special commission's recommendation that Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe be asked to resign. Lamothe offered his resignation Sunday December 14th.

Demonstrators have demanded the Martelly-Lamothe government be ended when the holding of general elections in October did not occur.

The commission is asking the opposition to declare a truce so both sides can agree to hold elections before Parliament closes down and Martelly rules by presidential decree.

Appointments to the Supreme Court and Permanent Electoral Council prepare Haiti for Elections

President Martelly appointed Me Anel Alexis Joseph to be the new President of the Court of Cassation that has been operating without one dating back to 2004. Martelly also appointed another judge, Jean-Louis Maecenas, to the COA, leaving four seats to be filled. The appointments have been held up because the Senate has submitted names of questionable character.

One of Joseph's first tasks was witnessing the swearing-in of nine new members of the Transient College of Permanent Electoral Council (CTCEP), who are replacing nine departing members, asked to tender their resignations, according to the Consultative Commission's recommendations. This turnover of the CTCEP fulfills one of the demands of the opposition, who want a new CTCEP to organize free, fair, and democratic state and local elections. After the swearing-in, the new members from the legislative, executive, and judicial branches will travel to the CTCEP in Petion-Ville to begin the task of organizing elections quickly.

The protestors want government corruption to stop and believe it should start with the disbandment of the Martelly-Lamothe government. They have been scuffling with police outside the National Palace, fired upon by U.N. peacekeeping soldiers and tear-gassed by local police. So far, one man has died near the rubble of the presidential palace.

Martelly is scheduled to meet with members of the CC on Monday to go over its recommendations. Currently three names are being floated for replacing Lamothe: Senator Jocelerme Privert, erstwhile interior minister; ex-prime minister Jean-Max Bellerive; and present Finance Minister Marie-Carmelle Jean-Marie.

During Lamothe's time in office he earned recognition for his involvement in pivotal infrastructure projects. But rumors and allegations he mis-handled funds for the Petrocaribe Fuel Program, and he spent too much government money to make himself a favored candidate for the presidency in 2016, turned his political supporters against him.
