Evans Paul Activists Awarded $41 Million in Punitive Damages

In 1989, former Haitian President, Proper Avril, authorized the torture and arrest of six political activists, including Evans Paul, then-Port-au-Prince Mayor.

By 1991, Avril faced a lawsuit brought by CCR, who sued under the Alien Tort Statue. Lawyers used Filartiga v. Pena-Irala case to mount their defense.

In 1994, Evans et al received $41 million in punitive damages. This marked the first time a Haitian dictator had been convicted of human rights abuses ever.

Michel Martelly enjoying 80 percent approval

According to the latest poll figure, Haitian president Michel Martelly is enjoying a comfortable approval rating among Haitians. Based on a poll taken by the PR firms, Newlink and Dagmar, his approval rating was 80.5% of the Haitian population.

This actually put the Haitian President the highest rated leader in the Western Hemisphere.

However, many in the opposition do not believe this poll, stating that it was not conducted in an objective manner

The country awaits word as to whether an election will be carried out smoothly this season. Given that the last election, which took place on November 28, 2010 and went into a run-off in March the next year when no majority leader was established, ended with the third place candidate, President Michel Martelly, becoming president after a voting scandal took down one of the two front runners, the people of Haiti wait to see how this year's elections with play out.
