During his first press conference on February 19th, 2016, Jocelerme Privert, the provisional president of Haiti, announced the names of six probable contenders for the Prime Minister's seat. They were: Ms. Myrlande Manigat (representing JISTIS platform), economist Fritz Jean (proposed by the civil society and human rights organizations), former Senator Edgard Leblanc Fils (proposed by the majority bloc in the Chamber of Deputies and the minority bloc in the Senate of the Republic), Jacques Sampeur (proposed by the G30), former Senator Simon Dieuseul Desras (proposed by the platform Palmis) and former Minister Joanas Gay (proposed by the platform Vérité). However, after extensive discussions in the Parliament on Wednesday, February 24, that number reduced to three, Mirlande Manigat, Edgar Leblanc Fils and Fritz Jean. Finally, economist Fritz Jean was chosen by Haiti's provisional President Jocelerme Privert on late Thursday, on February 25, 2016.

Here is a picture of former Senator François Anick Joseph who became Ministry of the Interior and Territorial Communities.

In a circular note dated April 1, 2016, by the General Directorate of the Ministry of Interior and Territorial Communities (MICT), the executives and the other employees of the department were informed that Mr. François Anick Joseph (born December 23, 1961) will be installed as the new minister of the Ministry of the Interior & Territorial Communities. His installation took place on the same afternoon. The portfolio of this ministry was earlier given to Pierrot Delienne, temporarily, along with his Ministry of Foreign and Religious Affairs on March 28, 2016. François Anick, a member of the ALTENATIV political party is a teacher by profession. We might remember that, following the chaotic August 9 election, then Senator Anick Joseph from Artibonite, on behalf of a joint committee, demanded the arrest of the President of CEP, Pierre Louis Opont. He accused Opont of misusing the $38 million election fund, which he received on behalf of the State, but he led the country to a dead end.

Simon Dieuseul Desras candidate for President in Haiti election 2015

Simon Dieuseul Desras candidate for President in Haiti election 2015

As the time for candidates who are interested in participating in the next election in Haiti is getting close, the name of the candidates have been coming out. We learned that Simon Dieuseul Desras is interested in becoming candidate for President in Haiti election 2015

The former President of the National Assembly (2012--15) and the former Senator Simon Dieuseul Desras, has announced himself as the most suitable candidate for the next Presidential election. His term as a Senator expired on January 12, 2015 but he was reinstated to his post by a court decision (Feb 6, 2015) which said his mandate was for 6 years instead of 4 years, so he would be in the Senate until 2017. However, his victory was a slightly hollow one, as the power of the senate was dissolved on January 12, 2015. Dieuseul Desra was an ally of Michel Martelly in the last presidential elections. He has said that he may seek the nomination of the Verite Political Party of former President Rene Preval, but that is yet to be finalized, because he is not sure which political banner he will ultimately carry.

Simon Dieuseul Desras or Andris Riché for Senate President

Who will control the Haitian Senate, Simon Dieuseul Desras or Andris Riché?

When Senator Simon Dieuseul Desras won the court case that saw him reappointed to his seat earlier this month, he might not have anticipated that his return to presidency of the senate would also be a fight. The sitting senate president, however, Andris Riche, is not prepared to give the position up easily. Riche has said the senate will wait for a decision from the State, a decision that Desras has made plain could only be waged by an appeal of the Court's order, which is a provisional decision.

Senate President Simon Dieuseul Desras reinstated by a Haitian court

Haiti will never stop surprising you and the reinstatement of Mr. Simon Dieuseul Desras as Senator of the Republic of Haiti is just another one.

The Haitian Senator was dismissed in January 2015 with nine other senators when their term expired. However on February 10, a Haitian court overturned his dismissal

He is expected to return to his function as President of the Senate immediately

Upon being reinstated to the post of Senate President, Senator Simon Dieuseul Desras took the time to comment on certain happenings in the country, which the senate, though now with 11 members, will be powerless to change other than through voicing its opinion. In that vein, Senator Desras started talking about the multiple strikes and demonstrations taking place across the country. There is the protesting of students of agronomy at the Ministry of Agriculture, the issue of the new gas and diesel prices, and the continued delay in elections.

Michel Martelly, Simon Dieuseul Desras and Jacques Stevenson Thimoléon reach agreement

The three main player in Haiti current crisis have reached a tentative agrement to avoid the worst. President Michel Martelly along with Senate president Simon Dieuseul Desras and President of the Chamber of Deputies Jacques Stevenson Thimoléon reach agreement.

Before the start of this new year, on the 29th of December 2014 to be exact, the nation's leader, President Michel Martelly forged an agreement with the heads of Haiti's two houses of parliament, to hopefully finally put an end to the issue that has sunk the country into near-crisis mode. The three men, including Jacques Stevenson Thimoléon and Simon Dieuseul Desras, came to what is being called a tentative agreement, one that should, theoretically, make it possible for an end to the stalemate by parliament's acceptance of Martelly's new, proposed consensus government.

There is life after Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe. The executive and the legislative power understand that clearly. This is a meeting between Deputy Jacques S. Thimoléon, M. Simon D. Desras and President Michel Martelly consulting to form a new government.

Consultative Commission Urges Opposition to Declare a Truce

President Martelly has abided by a special commission's recommendation that Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe be asked to resign. Lamothe offered his resignation Sunday December 14th.

Demonstrators have demanded the Martelly-Lamothe government be ended when the holding of general elections in October did not occur.

The commission is asking the opposition to declare a truce so both sides can agree to hold elections before Parliament closes down and Martelly rules by presidential decree.
