Here is Marie-Claire Heureuse Félicité Bonheur, the spouse of Jean-Jacques Dessalines. The got married in 1800 and together they had seven children

This famous Haitian woman was born in the city of leogane and her family never knew slavery. Her Father was Guillaume Bonheur and mother, Marie-Élisabeth Sainte-Lobelot.

One great act she is known for was during the siege of the city of Jacmel in 1800. She took care of the wounded and starving soldiers and somehow managed to convince her husband Jean-Jacques Dessalines to allow those wounded in the city to get out in order to receive proper medical care. later on she went into the city with food and medicine.

Marie-Claire Heureuse Félicité Bonheur, the first Empress consort of the independent Haiti, was the daughter of two poor but free Haitians from Leogane. She was born sometime in 1758. After becoming widow of her first husband Pierre Lunic in 1795, she married Jean-Jacques Dessalines in 1800 and became the Empress consort of Haiti (1804-1806) as the spouse of Jean-Jacques Dessalines. In early 1804, when Jacques Dessalines (born 20 September 1758, died 17 October 1806) issued drastic order, the extermination of the entire White population of Haiti, Marie-Claire was adamantly opposed to this policy and she made no secret of the fact. From her earliest days, she had been a nurse and teacher by heart. She maintained her principles and values, relentlessly worked to alleviate the suffering of prisoners and wounded men irrespective of their colors and races. In 1843, she was granted a modest pension by the government, but it was not because she was a former imperial consort; it was offered because the government confiscated all of her husband's extensive properties leaving nothing to her. Marie died on 8 August 1858 (aged 99-100).

As per the Institute for Criminal Policy Research and MINUSTAH December 2015 statistics, considering an estimated national population of 10.78 million at the end of 2015, Haiti's prison population rate per 100,000 of the national population is 102. Haiti has an official capacity of 2,431 inmates in its prison system of 17 prisons with an occupancy level of 454.4%. The prison population for the December 2015 shows a number of 11,046 detainees and of that percentage, the share of pre-trial detainees and female prisoners are 70.9% and 4.1% respectively. The new prison will replace an outdated Pétion-ville prison with 50 inmate capacity which currently houses 305 prisoners. Moreover, the new prison will protect the privacy of the women prisoners, which is a definite matter of concern. Over 25% of women are being held without legal cause, and many of them wait anywhere from three to seven years before even going to trial.

The Minister for women and women's Rights in Haiti has resigned the government of Martelly-Paul, following verbal abuses by President Michel Martelly on a woman in Miraguane

Ms. Morquette's resignation letter followed that of the Minister of Social Affairs, Mr. Victor Benoit done on August 6, 2015. This decision was taken by the Political Party Fusion Social Democrats following the statement of President Martelly in a political gathering in Miraguane.

Three members of Haiti's coalition government, representatives from the Fusion of Social Democrats have resigned in protest of an inappropriate and ribald humor of the Head of State against a woman in Miragoâne, during a political rally on July 28. During the rally, the President told a woman to go in the bushes and have sex. The woman had accused Martelly's government of incompetence because they failed to bring electricity to her community. The resigned ministers are, Victor Benoit, Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, Yves Rose Morquette, Minister for the Status and Rights of Women, and Mozart Clerisson, Secretary of State for Literacy. The resignation letters of Yves Rose Morquette and Victor Benoit have been submitted to the Prime Minister; only the letter from the Secretary of State for Literacy is still waiting.

Martelly's Behavior Causes Officials to Resign

President Martelly's sexist bashing of a woman, who criticized his government, is raising hackles, particularly with Fusion Social Democrats. Leader Edmonde Beauzile says the secretary of state, minister of women's affairs, and another cabinet minister have resigned in protest.

Martelly, president since May 2011, remains unaffected. He currently rules by decree and cannot run for a second term. With the few remaining months left before he leaves, he acts with impunity, no matter how offensive.

Shocking declaration made by a seating president in Haiti. On Tuesday, June 28, 2015, during a campaign rally in the city of Miraguane, president Michel Martelly did not use any diplomacy in addressing a woman in the crowd who was challenging his accomplishment in the region. The President replied to the surprise of many by telling the woman in Haitian Creole she should undress and allow the men at the campaign rally to sodomize her. He also stated that he would bring her on stage and do the same. The Haitian Head of State furthermore said if he was not president he would have broken her jaw.

What does EU and UN Think about Martelly's Sexist Remarks?

Women's group leaders in Haiti are expecting to hear from the European Union and United Nations, regarding President Martelly's assault on a woman in Miragoâne.

Martelly told a woman critical of his government to humiliate herself with the men at the rally, including himself. He added it was too bad he was president, or else he would have punched her in the jaw. Like Trump, he is an embarrassment to his country.
