Room to Learn Program Investment in Haitian Education System

The Haitian government wants to offer free public education to all children on the island, and has begun an Education Fund for this purpose, but it hasn't been well funded.

The U.S. Agency for International Development has chosen Haiti for its $15 million grant program, Room to Learn, so children will have safe access to schooling in areas that are conflict- and crisis-ridden. It is hoped this program will raise literacy rates, which are at 50%.

Fashion Maven Maguy Durcé Wins Top Award at Paris Fashion Competition

Fashion designer, Maguy Durcé collected an award at the Paris International Afro Caribbean Fashion Competition for her contribution to Haitian fashion, the Afro K 2013. Minister of Culture, Josette Darguste, lauded her victory as reflecting positively on Haiti's image.

Returning to Haiti from Paris, she will be received at Toussaint Louverture International Airport's diplomatic lounge. The Ministry of Culture and officials of the Haitian Network of Designers will be present to greet her.

Haiti Census

New Tools to be used for Haiti's 2014 General Census
The government of Haiti's (GOH) National Committee Census Chairman, Wilson Laleau, announced the Fifth General Census of Population and Housing of 2014 will gather information about the population's economic status and the availability of health and education services.

Projected to cost around $26 million dollars, the census will be paid for by the GOH, with support from Brazil and France.

To conduct the census, the GOH will use updated technology, social media, and more appropriate terminology.

Mole-Saint-Nicolas is the capital of the Mole-Saint-Nicolas Arrondissement in the Nord-Ouest Department.

A small town of 4,000 people, its roads are usable, a dirt runway services two airliners, and running water is plentiful. Mole-Saint-Nicolas also offers healthcare services by volunteer doctors from Slovenia.

Historical places of interest scattered about the area include remnants of colonial forts. The fishing industry thrives in the region and wood charcoal production continues, despite deforestation concerns.

Mole-Saint-Nicolas Plan for New Port and Tourist Attractions

A new port project for Mole-Saint-Nicolas was presented to Wilson Laleau, Economy and Finance Minister, by Rene Hubert, of IBI-DAA. The small town has the right physical features for port and tourist development.

The areas' wind channels and coastal water resources have potential for renewal energy projects. Use of natural resources for land development and furniture exports are also in the plan.

Laleau has asked for the cooperation of Parliament and allied sectors to suppport the government in this endeavor.
