United Nations and Haiti

United Nations and Haiti

Haiti and the United Nations, relationship.

The United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), a Multinational Interim Force (MIF) was first sent to Haiti on June 1, 2004, comprising 6,940 soldiers and 2,211 police, after the departure of President Bertrand Aristide into exile following a Coup d'état. To be more precise, its actual involvement in Haiti started in 1990 when at the request of the provisional government, an observer group was sent by the United Nation to oversee an election. When a coup d'état on 29 September 1991 overthrew (first time) President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, elected 8 months earlier, the Security Council set up a peacekeeping operation, United Nations Mission in Haiti (UNMIH)), on September 23, 1993. Following the earthquake of 2010, as per recommendation of the U.N Secretary-General, the number of forces in the MINUSTAH was increased. During their occupation in Haiti, they have trained Haitian Police forces (PNH) and helped to maintain laws and orders in the country.

Who is Jovenel Moise?

Who is Jovenel Moise?

Who is the candidate in Haiti presidential election Jovenel Moise?

Jovenel Moise (born June 26, 1968), the government backed candidate from the PHTK party was handpicked by the outgoing President Martelly as his successor. He was born in a modest family in Trou du Nord (North-East Department). Jovenel inherited own sense of discipline, civic and moral responsibility and love for the country from his parents. As a shrewd entrepreneur, he is the main promoter of the Agritrans banana export project in Haiti. Moise knows very well how to transform problems into opportunities. Mathias Pierre, a presidential candidate from the Konsyans Patriyotik party, when one week before the election, realized that he could not do well in the run, decided to support Jovenel Moise. However, Jovenel's success in the first round election, with 32.81% votes against 25.27% of Jude Célestin, was little unexpected because Celestine had a pre-election approval rating of 33.4% while Moise was much behind in the second place with 17.5% approval.

Jovenel Moise, a big winner

Jovenel Moise, a big winner

Here is the picture of candidate Jovenel Moise, a big winner.

The number that puts ruling party's candidate Jovenel Moïse much ahead of his other contenders has raised suspicions of massive frauds. As per announcement of Pierre-Louis Opont, the director general of the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP), the first two top finishers are Jovenel Moise of PHTK party and Jude Celestin from LAPEH banner. Moise has received 511,992 votes or 32.81% of the total votes, and Celestin obtained 394,390 or 25.27% of votes. Moise Jean-Charles of Pitit Dessalines finished third (14.27%) and Fanmi Lavalas' Maryse Narcisse came in fourth (7.05%). In the presidential contest, 1,538,393 valid votes were cast, the number of invalid votes were 120,066 and 22,238 votes were cast to 'no candidate'-- making that 8th place finisher. Turnout on October 25 was 26.4%. The nine member committee of the CEP has received 162 formal complaints of fraud within the scheduled grievance reporting time and has decided to investigate on 42 of such complaints. There are complaints that about 62% of the cast votes were acts of election riggings by the party agents. Numbers of election ballots, both filled and unfilled, were found lying carelessly in an unsecured manner following the election day. Since none could achieve the mandatory lead, there will be a run-off election on December 27, 2015.
