The Rich Cultural History of Haitian Music

Haitian music takes a variety of forms, from Voodoo-inspired Rara, to acoustic Twoubadou, roots-based Mizik Rasin, and the ever-popular Compás, a Dominican-inspired meringue, which has evolved with the times and cross-pollinating influences. Nemours Jean Baptiste created Kompa Direct in the 50s, which led to the Mini-Jazz movement of the 60s.

American rap has taken hold in Haiti, with a local, burgeoning hip-hop culture gaining popularity with the younger generation. Haiti's biggest hip-hop export is world-renowned Wyclef Jean.
