CARIFESTA XII Opens in Haiti

On Friday, August 21, the streets of Port-au-Prince were crowded with thousands of Haitians. People were standing on the streets to witness the official start of CARIFESTA XII. The event began with the arrival of the participants from twenty two nations; they arrived in Haitian traditional vehicles, 'tap-taps'. They paraded on the streets in their traditional national dresses. It was a scene of pure excitement; the foreigners were all wearing costumes of vibrant colours-- Haiti in their pride and glory; Barbados was in a Kadooment theme; Guyana in its masquerade theme, full with band and dancers and Trinidad in their bright red, black and white with make-up and costumes. The two hour long parade on the streets of the Haitian capital virtually exploded into a cultural concert that all of the French-speaking nation can be proud of. Ms. Nicolette Henry, the Minister of Education, Guyana, has revealed that since Guyana has a rich legacy to upkeep in regards to the CARIFESTA, its government has sanctioned $65 million for its representing team. The dancers and musicians from Guyana did enrich the atmosphere of CARIFESTA XII with their typical music rooted in ethnic heritage under their theme, 'Rites and Rhythms of Guyana.'

Newly renovated Ciné TRIOMPHE vandalized by Anti Martelly protesters

Here is a picture of the newly renovated Ciné TRIOMPHE. During a protest against the government of Michel Martelly the protesters took their frustrations on the new movie theater by vandalizing it. Many glass windows were broken by rock throwers

The rehabilitation and modernization of the "Triumph" (earlier it was called Ciné Théâtre Triomphe ), in a construction of seismic building built, began in December 2012 with a cost of around US$7 million and it was first scheduled to reopen on February 2014. However, after a series of rescheduling, the work of renovation was completed and was awaiting for inauguration in December 2014. For several years there was no proper theater in Haiti. The renovated 'Triumph' includes three areas, two movie theaters and a place reserved for conferences. Its first room has a capacity of 450 seats and a scene that can support 50 performers at a time. The second room can accommodate 306 people. Both of them have been equipped with state of the art audio and video equipments. The theater also houses well furnished, all-inclusive dressing rooms. However, on December 18, while the renovated movie house was awaiting the official inauguration, some Aristide vandals came and smashed the place into an unusable state. This is an exhibit of Aristide's power politics and Lavalas welfare philosophy for people of Haiti!

Haitian lottery system, No borlette is complete without a tchala

Haitian lottery system, No borlette is complete without a tchala

How Haitian lottery system came to be so popular in the Haitian society. When you talk about the Haitian Borlette, you now talk about tchala, New York lotto tickets, the Dominican Republic Lottery, bookies and much more

Haitian Lottery System, No Borlette is Complete Without a Tchala

The devastating earthquake has reduced much of the country to rubble, but one industry continues to grow amid the devastation.

A huge "Borlette" network, a typical version of the New York Lotto, covers the whole of Haiti that earns almost US$ 250,000 a day.The Haitians call them "Bank Borlette". "Tchala", the money of dreams is a journey through the world of Borlette game. The game is a popular form of private lottery in Haiti on which gamblers bets on balls bearing two digit numbers, in order to avoid fraud, these balls are drawn randomly every night in four different cities abroad--Miami, New York, Santo Domingo, Caracas. The game is present in all segments of life--from home, office, streets, countrysides and even in the presidential palace. The origin of Borlettes dates back to the regime of Francois "Papa Doc" Duvalier. In 1969, the then dictator of the country legalized the game soon after its inception. An estimate in 2005 revealed that the streets of the Haitian capital city were home to nearly 2,000 the "banques de borlette", more than double the number of schools and universities in Port-au-Prince. Haitians spent over $1.5 billion per year on the borlette, an astounding amount for a country whose GDP in the year 2009 was $6.9 billion! During the same year, there were eleven private companies to run banques de borlette in Port-au-Prince; the largest one had hundreds of franchises.

In a sense, "Borlette" is a temporary but tangible license to fantasize about everything the poor Haitians would do if suddenly money becomes no object. The poor people are too deeply (and expensively) engaged in the fantasy for their own good. They dream of lucky numbers, Even the voodoo priests are enlisted for help.
