Red Cross used Haiti donations to reduce deficit and pay overhead

Here is a picture of several Haitians, each awarded a box of goodies from the Red Cross. They were the charity organization to receive the largest amount of donations for relief efforts to Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. However the Red Cross used most of the fund to reduce their own accumulated deficits and pay their foreign employees huge salaries.

Red Cross steals Hundreds of Millions from Haiti Earthquake Relief

When Haiti was blown off its foundations by the 2010 earthquake, the international community responded, donating hundreds of millions of dollars. The Red Cross was the biggest donor at half a billion.

Suspicious because only six homes had been built in the last five years by the Red Cross, ProPublica investigated, discovering the agency used $100 million to lower their debts and another one-third of donations to cover their overhead.

Soccer Player Andrew Jean-Baptiste gets call from Haiti National Team

Haitian-American Andrew Jean-Baptiste has yet to play a single game as central defender for the Red Bulls in New York. In his fourth year in Major League Soccer (MLS), he hasn't been a starter. Standing in his way are two seasoned central defenders, Damien Perrinelle and Ronald Zubar. But a big break is coming his way. Haiti National Team (HNT) is competing for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, and they have called Jean-Baptiste to be on the provisional roster.

At age 22, he can still play on youth national teams, but the camps haven't called him up. They showed interest in the young player, but because he lacked a passport he lost out on that opportunity. HNT has been patient in waiting for his birth certificate, finally found eight months ago in Haiti. But there is still the issue of his passport, yet to be processed. He says it is not problem, the national team will accept him. Once that happens, the passport will be on a fast track to get to him as soon as possible.

Jean-Baptiste is excited about joining the HNT. Ever since the end of his rookie year he has wanted to be with HNT. He understands that "Haiti would be a good opportunity for me, it'd open up a lot more doors . . ." He is talking about getting on the playing field and clocking more minutes. He says it will bring him international opportunities.

Street Art, Redesign Common Areas in Haiti

Street Art, Redesign Common Areas in Haiti

Haiti has a tradition to illustrate the street walls with unique contemporary iconography. They are mostly depiction of hand painted advertisement on the vehicles or display of religious, cultural or political imageries. In most popular expression and forms of Haitian visual arts, including the internationally acclaimed contemporary Haitian paintings, the roots of Haitian voodoo iconography can be easily traced, although it is not fully recognized institutionally. Recently in the late May, the French Institute in Haiti has launched a two week long project named "Street Art, Redesign Common Areas" which started at the residence of the French artist Bault who has agreed to work jointly with the Haitian artists to create collaborative murals to redesign the streets and public places in some of the selected parts in the Haitian cities.

He has urged the Haitians living abroad to play a greater active role in reshaping the developments of the country with their influences on political, social and economic fronts. During the meeting, he has advocated for their rights to vote in the next election. According to him, Haitian diaspora contribute for about $2 billion per year, which is very significant for the Haitian economy.
