Fair Trade Cafe in West Palm Beach

Fair Trade Cafe in West Palm Beach

"Fair Trade Cafe" is an effort of the Lifecoast Church, Florida, to help Haitian coffee growers so that they receive a fair price for what they grow. Earlier, an average coffee farmer in Haiti used to earn a meager $0.65 to $1.00 on per pound of coffee produced in a 12 hour workday. However, with the help of 'Fair Trade Cafe' their daily earnings have grown up by almost 500%, translating that into $3.35 per pound of coffee. Their support to the Haitian coffee industry has helped immensely because Haitian coffee is a wonderful product; it hardly needs any introduction but a proper platform where it can be sold. Coffee has been a principal crop of the Caribbean nation of Haiti since the early 1700s; it was once a flourishing industry, but it has been crippled by decades of deforestation, political chaos and now, climate change--today it barely registers in the world survey. While most business works to increase its own stakeholder's wealth, the Lifecoast Church instead, is working to contribute towards the welfare of the Haitian coffee growers. They work in a cooperative model that works to ensure that a share of every purchase goes back to the island nation so that they can sustain and grow.

The Fair Trade Cafe is run by the volunteers of Lifecoast Church voluntarily as part of their community service without any profit motive. The ambience of the cafe has a great welcoming feeling. They will keep your cup filled with delicious Haitian coffee with other tasty mouth watering beverages and pastries.

A cup of coffee at Fair Trade Cafe is truly a cup of hope for Haitian coffee farmers.

Here is a picture of Mr. Camille Chalmers, Executive Director of director of the Haitian Platform for an Alternative Development, or (PAPDA). Born on November 8, 1956, he is a renowned social economist who completed graduate studies in Venezuela

Haitian Banks remain Silent as Customers close Accounts

Haiti is on the verge of an "economic panic" due to the gourde's devaluation. Economist Camille Chalmers says neo-liberal policies are to blame. It may make Haiti more competitive globally but the purchasing power of wage earners suffer.

Upcoming elections may not happen say observers, and fear of destabilization has people withdrawing funds from Haitian banks, transferring their money overseas.

Chalmers wants Bank of the Republic of Haiti to publicly address the situation and not remain silent.

Anthony Bennett (Ti Tony) candidacy approved by BCEN

Here is a picture of the Haitian-American Anthony 'Ti Tony' Bennett who informed the public that his candidacy for president was approved by Haiti electoral council (BCEN). This information has not been confirmed by any other person or institution. The amended Haiti Constitutional make Anthony Bennett a Haitian national by origin.

Tony Bennett says PEC has approved his Candidacy

Haitian-American Tony Bennett has had his candidacy for the Haitian presidency approved by the Electoral Council. A controversy exists though as to whether he can legally hold the office.

His lawyers' interpretations of Constitutional amendments, they claim, allow him to seek office even though he is not Haitian by origin. Rather he ". . . possesses Haitian nationality by origin . . .", in contradistinction "to be Haitian by origin."

Senator Marco Rubio against attempts to disqualify Haitian candidates

Senator Marco Rubio against attempts to disqualify Haitian candidates

U.S. aid to Haiti could be in jeopardy if US Senator Marco Rubio can have his way. He has proposed amendment to block aids to Haiti if the CEP attempts to disqualify some of the candidates in the upcoming election in Haiti for political reasons

Haiti risks losing U.S. Foreign Aid

Assessing Progress in Haiti Act (APHA) of 2014 is an amendment waiting for President Obama's signature. Senator Marco Rubio introduced the legislation.

Passage of APHA would affect U.S. aid to Haiti if the Provisional Electoral Council (PEC) eliminates candidates for political reasons. It has already eliminated ex-Prime Minister Lamothe and he is appealing the disqualification.

If enacted the U.S. Secretary of State would be obligated to give information to Congress on eliminations made for political gain by the PEC.
