The onion is a botanical called allium cepa. The plant grows two feet in height, with a three to four month growth period.

Onions contain 40 calories, little fat, and dietary fiber. They offer protection from cancer, decrease blood sugar and cholesterol levels and lower the risk of coronary artery disease and stroke.

Vitamin C in onions acts as an anti-inflammatory, relieving cold and flu symptoms. They are a plentiful source of vitamin B complex, alleviating nervous system disorders.

Adding some of the zest of a lemon to a tablespoon of the lemon's juice gives 1,600 oxygen radical absorbency capacity (ORAC) to one's diet. The higher a food's ORAC value, the more free radical-fighting antioxidants one gets. The antioxidants also are said to aid in the lowering of the risk of cancer when eaten as fresh fruit. The juice of a lemon also provides over 30 mg of vitamin C, a high amount, almost half of the daily dose for women and a third of that for men.

The political party of Haiti's former president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, again made news when three of its representatives, Maryse Narcisse, Pasha Vorbe and Antony Dessources, turned up to the first day of the Inter-Haitian dialogue, despite previously standing against their party's participation in the event. While present, the group said they would remain cautious and were only there to hear the proceedings. They reserved the right to withhold proposals for now and leave if agendas did not complement their initiative.

The new development plan for the Artibonite Department town of Desdunes, will bring in much needed community committees through the initiative of three planned activities. The population of the town, which lies less than a hundred miles from Port-au-Prince, was said to be just over 20,000 at the last reading. These people are set to benefit much from the plans as they involve a focus on the agricultural, health and education sectors, plus a look at culture and other related priorities.

Thirty seats make up the Haitian Senate, the National Assembly's upper house, and the ten administrative departments each seat three members there. In the past, senate presidents have included, Dejean Belizaire, Edgard Gardy Leblanc, Yvon Neptune, who sat for two years from 2000 to 2002, Yvon Feuille who gave up the seat in 2004, Joseph Lambert, whose tenure lasting for only months during 2006, and Kely Bastien, the current president of the senate.

Goat, Bank account for Haitian Peasant

Haitian families that don't have access to more modern sources of funding rely heavily on the profit they make from raising and selling livestock, especially goats, for their livelihoods. With the help of the Asosyasyon pou Pwoteksyon Anviwonnman Gwomòn, the Lambi Fund was able to hand out 132 goats to families, and provide them with tools and training to help them build a sustainable cycle. From the sale of these goats at the market, families can provide better food, education and health for their dependents.

Haitian-Canadian Jean Pascal won at the end of the 12th round

The Bell Centre in Montreal housed the underwhelming matchup of Jean Pascal and Lucien Bute recently, in which the Haitian-born Pascal shored-up his victory with little resistance from Bute. Following his victory, Pascal is now the World Champion Heavyweight Adonis Stevenson's mandatory challenger. The two Haitians are at the top of their game currently and their matchup will drum up at least as much attention as did Pascal vs. Bute.
