Commissioner Monestime breaks barriers, becoming first Haitian-American Chairman

Jean Monestime has achieved another distinction in his career. He has been elected hands down by his fellow Miami-Dade Commissioners as chairman, the first Haitian-American to be so honored. In 2010 Monestime also served as Miami-Dade's first Haitian-American commissioner.

At the swearing-in ceremony Monestime talked about plans to lift South Florida citizens up from poverty. He expressed his gratitude to the residents of District 2, who have placed their trust in him to serve their interests.

Pope Francis has named a new envoy to Haiti. Archbishop Eugene Martin Nugent as papal nuncio to Haiti. The Vatican announced the appointment on Saturday.

Pope Francis has selected Archbishop Eugene Martin Nugent as the 'Papal Nuncio' to Haiti as the new envoy to perform the significant works that remain undone to rebuild the nation five years after the devastating earthquake. A 'Papal Nuncio' (officially known as an Apostolic Nuncio) is the head of a diplomatic mission, a permanent representative, generally equals the ecclesiastical rank or an ambassador extraordinary with the full power of independent action on behalf of the Church. Earlier, on 13 February 2010, Nugent had been appointed as the Church's Apostolic Nuncio to Madagascar and Apostolic Delegate to the nearby Comoros Islands , and on 11 March 2010, he was named also as the Apostolic Delegate to Mauritius and Seychelles. Nugent was born in Gurtaderra Scariff County Clare, Ireland on 21 October 1958.

Here is a picture of World Vision's Sant Lespwa of Hope located near the city of Hinche. Rothschild Doyno Collaborative received the award from The American Institute of Architects for the design

The Sant Lespwa Center of Hope, located outside of Hinche, Haiti, has garnered the team an award for architecture in the 2015 AIA Honor Awards. Commissioned by World vision, the center was built with the Haitian breeze in mind, with the building giving over to a breezeway that allows the light and wind in, and also gives astounding views of the nearby mountains. The scope of the brilliance of the architecture also involves water collection, the generation of electricity, and consideration of the treatment of sewage. All these plans were made with the input of the community, and the building also provided the training of over a hundred locals.

Me Anel Alexis Joseph resigns as President of the Supreme Council of the Judiciary

It finally happened. The President of the Supreme Council of the Judiciary, Chief Justice Anel Alexis Joseph, finally resigned resigned on Wednesday .

There are several rumors around the resignation, including one mentioning the fact thath Judge Anel Alexis Joseph was paid the sum of $300,000 for his resignation. This has not been confirmed.

Other developments involve the ratification of Prime Minister Evans Paul that seems to have difficulties at this time. Some sources revealed that the Lavalas Leader is not in favor of his nomination

Within the first few weeks of the new year, and amidst the current political drama caused by the dissolution of parliament, Haiti's chief justice, Anel Alexis Joseph, tendered his resignation as President of the Supreme Council of the Judiciary. this move came at the end of a set of meetings which lasted the entire day between Haiti's President and senators. His resignation came nearly a month following the recommendation, made by the special committee set up by the President, that he, along with the Prime Minister, resign in order to usher in a new government. For his resignation, it is said Joseph asked for the salary from his remaining 7 years of the term which was to last 9 years.

Haiti celebrates its National Independence Day on January 1st. This year marks the 211th anniversary of Haiti's liberation as the first black-led republic in the world. Christopher Columbus first discovered Haiti and conferred the name Hispaniola on the entire island, which included the Dominican Republic on the eastern portion and Haiti the western. Later French colonists renamed Ayiti, Haiti.

According to several news sources, Haitian President Michel Martelly had a meeting with Cuban leader Raúl Castro on behalf of the United States for the release of Alan Gross. According to the sources, he was asked by Florida Democratic Senator Bill Nelson facilitate the relationship between Cuba and the United States since he has a good relationship with both. It is noted that this meeting took place in early 2013 when President Michel Martelly took a secrete trip to Cuba with his son Olivier Martelly

Following the meeting with the Cuban leader, President Martelly was personally contacted over the phone by Vice President Joe Biden to thank him for his efforts.

After the news of the cessation of the embargo between the United States of America and Cuba, Haitian President, Michel Martelly, issued a statement that expressed his felicitations for the news, as Haiti, closely entwined with both countries, has literally been stuck between the proverbial rock and a hard place. Martelly used Haiti's position to facilitate the negotiations for the release of US citizen, Alan Gross.The tempering of relations between Cuba and the U.S. is expected to be a gradual thing, as both countries need to embark on a process of recovery.

Here is the picture of a Christmas celebrationat that took place a the National Palace on December 23, 2014 with President Michel Martelly and First Lady Sophia Martelly

Children and other patrons, decked out in the seasonal colors of red and green, gathered in the courtyard of the National Palace to celebrate the Christmas season with their Prime Minister, Michel Martelly. Also present was his wife, Sophia, whose work for the past four years has brought the over 3,000 kids, many of whom have disabilities, to the festivities. The event facilitated the playing of games, the eating of food and the giving of gifts. President Martelly and his wife used the occasion to wish the public good health and prosperity for the season.

Here is a picture of the Haiti-born Canadian Adonis Stevenson as he knocked out Dmitry Sukhotsky in fifth round on December 19, 2014.

He was defending his WBC light-heavyweight title in Quebec City

Adonis Stevenson has done it again; though some may say it was an easy win against the Russian, Dmitry Sukhotsky, who was smaller and obviously a lesser fighter than the polished Haitian-Canadian boxer. The televised fight ended with Stevenson ranking up a 25-1 record with 21 knockouts, as his opponent was taken out with a knockout within the fifth round. The win also means that Stevenson will keep his WBC light-heavyweight title, which he earned after taking down Chad Dawson in 2013.
