Who killed Emperor Jean-Jacques Dessalines, what was the motif?

Who killed Emperor Jean-Jacques Dessalines, what was the motif?

There is a mystery around the death of Emperor Jean-Jacques and the more I hear about it, the more confused it gets.

I learned in school that Jean-Jacques Dessalines was assassinated at Pont Larnage, now known as Pont-Rouge, on 17 October 1806 on his way to fight some rebels. However, other historians have come with different takes on the assassination of the Emperor. We know that two other leaders in the Haitain revolution, Alexandre Pétion and Henri Christophe, both were disaffected members of Dessalines' administration.

A theory that has been circulating explains that On October 17, a soldier by the name of Garat was the first one to fire on Jean-Jacques Dessalines in Pont Rouge. As he missed his target, he instead killed Dessalines'horse. This group of historians confirmed that General Yayou was the one who actually killed him.

Yet, there is another theory that explained that a fact that the Emperor was assassinated not in Pont rouge but at the residence of Alexandre Petion. These historians that he was assassinated by Pétion himself during a gala.

After all these, the question remains: Who killed Emperor Jean Jacques and what was the motif?
