Hospital Sainte-Thérèse de Miragoâne

Hospital Sainte-Thérèse de Miragoâne

Hospital Sainte Therese De Miragoane is next to Miragoâne and is located in Nippes department, Haiti. It is lying in a dire poor state for past few years that needs immediate government's intervention. In the early 2010, Dr. Yves Chouteau on behalf of a special envoy organized by Medical Support Group, Haiti (GAMA) in an order to encourage balanced development of medical facilities between the capital and other cities had concluded that this is a simple big clinic without any hospital structure. Whatever remained then whether medicine, instrument or medical professionals--they were all in depleted, obsolete and inoperative state. The hospital building was damaged, some parts were collapsed. Operation rooms were hardly functional. Even items for first-aid were not readily available. The facility once used to receive 20,000 to 25,000 patients per year including 6,000 pregnant women with diseases such as malnutrition, diarrhea and respiratory infections in children. The hospital also used to receive HIV / AIDS patients with a higher prevalence rate of 9%, compared to 4% in the rest of the country. Internal revenue per month was between 120,000 and 150,000 gourdes at Hospital Sainte Therese De Miragoane while the actual expenditure was more than double. The hospital had no alternative but to incur piles of debts to its suppliers.

Hospital Immaculée Conception, Les Cayes

Hospital Immaculée Conception, Les Cayes

After the devastating earthquake of 2010, the reconstruction of the Maternity Hospital Immaculate Conception of Les Cayes started with the laying of foundation stone on September 12, 2011. The reconstruction project received a funding of 15 million Gourdes from the government and its partners in MSPP (National Department of Public Health and Population) under American support program of Presidential Emergency Plan for Aids Relief. It was decided that a temporary hanger would be converted to accommodate patients. Dr. Marie Josette Calixte did welcome the reconstruction initiative and stressed the importance to improve the future quality of service offered. In spite of insufficient fund and limited facilities, the four departments of the hospital, viz., maternity, pediatric, surgery and emergency had always remained busy. However, the service of the hospital never remained free from criticism, like, Medicines were sold at black market price, medical cares were mostly provided by student-trainees, and many others. However, the patronage of the Cuban government through own doctors and funding were well accepted.

Zanmi Lasante, Hospital in Cange

Zanmi Lasante, Hospital in Cange

In 1987, an American Paul Farmer, most famous for his book 'Mountains Beyond Mountains' about the creation of his Boston-based nonprofit organization 'Zanmi Lasanti' (Haitian Creole for Partners in Health) founded this set up with his friends Thomas J. White, and Todd McCormack to improve the overall condition of health care and services in Haiti. On his first visit to Haiti in 1983, he was very much disappointed with the conditions of Haitian hospitals and dissatisfied with the implementation processes of different foreign aid sponsored health programs. He was attracted to 'Cange' in Haiti because it had redefined the meaning of poverty to him. In 1998, 'Partners in Health' became well-known for their social support network and for works to fulfill the objectives on medical and moral intention concentrating more on solidarity rather than charity alone. It had the credit to launch world's first free, comprehensive HIV care and treatment program.

Clash between Valéry Numa and Clarens Renois

Clash between Valéry Numa and Clarens Renois

Here is a picture of two famous Haitian media personalities, Valéry Numa and Clarens Renois.

Clarens Renois is primarily known to the public as a journalist. He runs an online media, the PNH (Haiti Press Network) that he founded and a correspondent of Agence France Presse in Haiti. On August 13, Clarens, one of the most respected members in the media, both in Haiti and abroad got involved in a debate with reporter Valéry Numa on a Radio Vision 2000's Guest Space Show. The host criticized Renois rather harshly without giving the honor he deserves as one of the most noteworthy candidates for the presidency of Haiti (from the platform of Union Nationale pour l'Integrité et la Reconciliation). He is a charming gentleman with a sensitive heart and attentive ear. His moral and ethical journalism has involved himself with Radio France International (RFI), Radio Suisse Romande, Voice of America, CNN, ABC news USA, and CBC Canada. The host of the show Valéry Numa became very much vocal about Clarens' most efforts and his initiative to form a coalition of forty presidential candidates; he even had termed that as an act of a greenhorn. However, Renois replied, you cannot put anyone's idea into the voters' heads. They will act by their hearts. And he reminded Numa, holding a microphone does never make one almighty; the duty of a journalist is not to advise but to ask questions humbly and find the answers.

Should birthright citizenship be eliminated in the US?

Should birthright citizenship be eliminated in the US?

What is your opinion on this? Do you think birthright citizenship in the United States should be eliminated?

"Birthright" establishes a principle of equality that dates back to the very creation of U.S democracies. Donald Trump has recently proposed to end birthright citizenship. He has argued that granting automatic citizenship to children born in the U.S. remains the biggest magnet for illegal immigration. The United States confers citizenship by what's referred as "jus soli" -- Latin for right of soil -- as opposed to "jus sanguinis" -- Latin for right of blood. The supporters of Trump are arguing that immigrants are taking advantage of this practice by giving birth to "anchor babies" -- children who could eventually help their parents get citizenship. While others argue that it's a time honored American practice that should endure. Donald's proposal requires a constitutional amendment with a two thirds majority vote in both the House and the Senate, followed by ratification of three-fourths of the states or a constitutional convention called for by two-thirds of the State legislatures-- which have a very thin chance of success.

Makeshift camps "Pak Kado" for Deporded in Anse-à-Pitre

Makeshift camps

Here is a picture of a Makeshift camps "Pak Kado" in Anse-à-Pitre for the Deported people coming from the Dominican Republic.

On August 15 and 16, 2015, the Support Group for Returnees and Refugees (GARR) had visited different sites at Anse-à-Pitre which have been built to accommodate the future returnees, our compatriots, from the Dominican Republic. The purpose of their visit was to gather information on the facilities and infrastructure that have been created for the deportees. "Pak Kado" is a camp at the foot of a hill where over 115 repatriated families from the D.R are living since July 17, 2015. The makeshift camps have been built here out of cardboard and straw. There is no regular supply of clean water and food. In similar condition at "Tête à l'eau", a second camp located about 3 kilometers from 'Pak Kado', another 140 families live. People here are dying of hunger. The members of an organization sometime visit these camps and help them with little food. That's all.

candidate Jerry Tardieu to challenge results

candidate Jerry Tardieu to challenge results

Here is a picture of candidate for deputy for Pétion-ville, Jerry Tardieu, VERITE delivering a message to a crowd.

Jerry Tardieu, the candidate for deputy for Pétion-ville, from VERITE party, has challenged the first round of the 2015 legislative elections result published and displayed in the Departmental Electoral Office West by the Provisional Electoral Council. As per his statement, a tabulation of the minutes (procès-verbaux) in his possession, suggests that he has received 34.59% of the votes against his nearest rival's 8.54%. Thus he was ahead by 26.05% vote, confirming his victory with over 25% lead. Thus it differs from the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) figure which states 22.05% lead out of 30.86% of votes in possession of Tardieu. The Electoral Decree states that, in a contest for election of Deputy, if a candidate is not a holder of absolute majority votes, such candidate may be proclaimed as a winner if his lead is over 25% than his closest opponent. Thus, Jerry Tardieu has reasons for unhappiness.
