Haiti is not new to devastating events, the likes of which can leave the country crippled in the immediate aftermath, as well as on a longer term. Just four years ago, the massive earthquake gave evidence of this. This month, the country's first helicopter service for emergency medical response became operational. The feat is thanks to the non-profit organization Ayiti Air Anbilans (AAA). Days ago the AAA flew their first patient, and after a visit from First Lady Sophia Martelly, they await the auspicious visit of the Head of State, President Michel Martelly.
The risk of offering medical services in Haiti, during a time of crises and during times of relative calm include geographical obstacles, equipment and the lack of emergency response. It is widely stated that many patients need not succumb but for a failure to get them care in time. The white, blue and red helicopters of the AAA strive to ameliorate this.
The fleet is equipped with modern equipment that can render critical care and even some surgery. On it will fly a trained medical staff that can offer vital triage in a bad situation, while the helicopter routes them to any one of the 15 waiting affiliate clinics. This exemplary, much needed service will be provided to patients, regardless of their ability to pay.
This project came out of the agreement with Air Methods Corporation (AMC) announced around the third anniversary of the 2010 earthquake. The agreement stated that the AMC would give two Bell 407 helicopters (one as primary and one as backup), three pilots and two mechanics. The AAA was to provide the medical equipment and the clinical staff.

Hospital Bernard Mevs
In 2012, former President of the United States, Bill Clinton, announced there would be a grant to implement a new education and medical training program at the Bernard Mevs Hospital in Haiti. Over 16 months, 47 radiologists, pathologists and lab technicians received training, and medical equipment that was state of the art was donated. Today, the hospital is the only one offering trauma, rehabilitation and critical care in the country. Established after the 2010 earthquake, the hospital filled a necessary gap in Haitian health-care, though that care is largely localized to the capital.

Many hands make the load light, it is often said in Haiti, and the cooperation between Partners in Health and Zanmi Lasante make the building of the University Hospital of Mirebalais a testament to that. The 300-bed facility, at 205,000 square feet, was a much-needed institution to the area where residents were in desperate need of medical aid. Today, after opening in 2013, the hospital provides care to 185,000 people in Mirebalais and two neighboring communities.

Hopital Georges Gauvin de Petit Goave and Grand-Goave
The tourist destination that is Grand Goave is often forgotten when the time comes for state authorities to make planning decisions. It's one of the reasons why the coastal town, known for its beaches that tourists love to frequent, has been slow on the technological upgrades. Linked to the country by only a mobile phone service, one radio station, one TV station and virtually no postal service, the town also only has one hospital to speak of. Luckily, the staff at Hopital Georges Gauvin, comprised of dedicated doctors and nurses, some from Cuba, handle the daily traffic valiantly.
